Abstract:
Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Abstract:
This collection consists of documents pertaining to and the hand-signed letters of prominent American figures of the early 1920s. Many concern explorer Henry Grant Bryant and the Melville-Bryant Drift Cask Experiment. Other notable persons associated with this collection include Martin van Buren, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Ulysses S. Grant, and James Buchanan. Additionally, there are two autograph books within the collection.

George Aaron Barton papers, 1859-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:
George Aaron Barton taught at Haverford College as a lecturer for two years and at the same time joied the Bryn Mawr faculty as Associate Professor of Biblical literature and Semitic Languages, 1891. He taught at Bryn Mawr continuously as Professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages until 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylcania as Professor of Semitic Languages. In addition, Dr. Barton was director of the American School for Oriental Research at Jerusalem, 1902-03, and at Baghdad, 1921-34; also Professor of New Testament Literature and Laguage at the Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,, 1921-37. An acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends (Orothodox) from 1879-1918, Barton was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1918 and priest the following year. Maurine Boie La Barre Papers, 1863-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Maurine Boie La Barre received her B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1927, did graduate work in English there 1927-1928, and received her M.A. in Sociology there in 1932. She received her M.S.W. from Bryn Mawr in 1937 and did further work at the Pennsylvania School of Social Work. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she was editor-inchief of The Family, journal of the Family Welfare Association of America in New York City, and in 1943 she wrote the New York Baby Book which was given to every new mother in the city. The Maurine Boie La Barre papers consists of professional publications, personal and academic papers.

Abstract:
Helen Herron Taft Manning (1891-1987) was the daughter of President of the United States William Howard Taft and his wife Helen Herron. Taft graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1915, was named dean in 1917, and rose to acting president in 1919. The Helen Taft Manning papers house the records of Helen Taft Manning. This collection, which dates from 1861 to 1992, with bulk dates of 1915 to 1974, consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, and personal objects from the Manning family.

J. Hampton Barnes collection of autograph letters, 1804-1891 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The J. Hampton Barnes Collection of Autograph Letters consists of 37 documents, most which are letters written to Dr. David Hosack (1769-1835). After attending Columbia and Princeton, he began his medical practice in Alexandria, VA. He subsequently was Professor of Botany at Columbia and taught in the medical school. He was the attending physician at the Burr-Hamilton duel, a founder of Rutgers Medical College, a founder of Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and an author of numerous scientific works and biographies. The collection contains correspondence from a number of noteworthy people, such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Baron von Humboldt, and Sir Humphry Davy.

Jane M. Oppenheimer papers, 1859-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Jane M. Oppenheimer was a biologist and science historian. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1932 with a degree in biology, later taking a Ph.D. from Yale in zoology. She taught biology at Bryn Mawr from 1938-1980, and also designed an experiment for NASA in the 1970s. This collection, which ranges from 1849 to 1981, includes various materials related to NASA experiments and some of Oppenheimer's class materials.
