Herman Joseph Heuser papers, 1890-1925 (bulk) 1811-1933 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Herman Joseph Heuser, D.D. (1851-1933) was a Catholic intellectual and prolific writer who influenced scholarly circles and clerical life in the United States and abroad through his literary work. Heuser edited the American Ecclesiastical Review (1889-1975) as well as published The Dolphin (1900-1908), a Catholic literary magazine. These publications reflected Heuser's varied interests from clerical subjects to the arts. He published fourteen books, eight of which appeared serially in The Dolphin. This collection includes primarily correspondence, sermons, prayers, scrapbooks, and personal writings. It also includes materials related to Patrick Augustine Sheehan.

Elizabeth Sarah Kite papers, 1890-1935 (bulk) 1865-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Sarah Kite (1864-1954) was a teacher, social scientist, historian, author, and archivist. Born in Philadelphia to Quaker parents, Kite was educated at Westtown Boarding school and the Philadelphia Friends’ Select School; and then studied extensively in Europe. In 1906, she converted to Catholicism, after her experiences with French Catholics. From 1909 to 1918, Kite was employed in the research laboratory at the Vineland Training School, and conducted research in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. She translated Development of Intelligence in Children and The Intelligence of the Feeble-Minded by Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon (translation published 1916). She also researched and published on various historical topics, in particular the influence of French participation during the American Revolution, and served as the archivist for American Catholic Historical Society from 1932 to 1949. Mary Katharine Woodworth papers, 1787-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archaeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college's first course on 20th-century writers. She received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Bryn Mawr in 1968 upon her retirement. Her bequest of her entire estate to Bryn Mawr in 1988, which included Chagall's The Violinist, made her the 4th largest contributor to the college at the time. Speer Family papers, 1802-1982 (inclusive) 1883-1943 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Speer Family papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family's papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Abstract:: This collection consists of documents pertaining to and the hand-signed letters of prominent American figures of the early 1920s. Many concern explorer Henry Grant Bryant and the Melville-Bryant Drift Cask Experiment. Other notable persons associated with this collection include Martin van Buren, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Ulysses S. Grant, and James Buchanan. Additionally, there are two autograph books within the collection.

A.E. Housman papers, 1859-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Alfred Edward Housman, the English poet and classicist, was born on March 26, 1859 near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He was appointed to the Chair of Greek and Latin at University College, London in 1892. Housman soon began writing the series of poems which was eventually published as "A Shropshire Lad" in 1896 and later in 1922,"Last Poems" was published. In 1911, he became the professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge where he taught for more than 30 years. Housman passed away from heart disease in April of 1936. This collection includes family related materials, notes on his famous lecture "The Name and Nature of Poetry", photographs, general correspondence and writings.

George Aaron Barton papers, 1859-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George Aaron Barton taught at Haverford College as a lecturer for two years and at the same time joied the Bryn Mawr faculty as Associate Professor of Biblical literature and Semitic Languages, 1891. He taught at Bryn Mawr continuously as Professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages until 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylcania as Professor of Semitic Languages. In addition, Dr. Barton was director of the American School for Oriental Research at Jerusalem, 1902-03, and at Baghdad, 1921-34; also Professor of New Testament Literature and Laguage at the Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,, 1921-37. An acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends (Orothodox) from 1879-1918, Barton was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1918 and priest the following year. Melanie Atherton Updegraff Collection, 1910s-1980s (bulk) 1685-2020 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Colonel Richard A. Gimbel collection of Edgar Allan Poe materials, 1809-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Richard Gimbel (1898-1970) was a leading rare book and manuscript collector and the son of the founder of Gimbel's department store. Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, short-story writer, editor, and literary critic, and is considered part of the American Romantic Movement. This collection of material was largely collected by Richard A. Gimbel and dates from 1809 to 1995. It includes numerous original manuscripts and correspondence by or related to Poe.
