Abstract:: James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." This collection contains many materials, including correspondence, photographs, record books, awards, and printed material such as newspapers and pamphlets. New York Quaker papers, 1800s

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of a single folder of miscellaneous materials attributed to Quakers in New York. Included are extracts of letters to and from Dartmouth Monthly Meeting, materials related to Stephen Buffington, descriptions of the area around E. Nottingham Meeting, and manuscripts regarding Elias Hicks. Additionally, this collection includes manuscripts that appear to have lines drawn using a mathematical compass, with biblical extracts copied around the sides. Some of these items include red wax seals in the center.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Extent:: 4 linear ft.
Abstract:: Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Elizabeth Gray Vining papers, 1897-1989 (inclusive)

Extent:: 14.5 linear ft. (24 boxes, 8 volumes)
Abstract:: Elizabeth Gray Vining (1902-1999) was an author of children's books and served as the tutor to the crown prince of Japan, Akihito, from 1946 to 1950. The collection consists of correspondence, materials regarding books authored by Vining, articles, lectures and addresses, photographs, and information documenting her and her family's lives.
