- Joseph Gibbons Richardson was born in Philadelphia in 1836. He earned his M.D. in 1862 from the University of Pennsylvania, and later was a lecturer on pathological anatomy and professor of hygiene. Richardson is best known for his contributions to the field of medical microscopy. He died in Philadelphia in 1886.

Richardson papers date from 1862 to 1887, and document Richardson's professional career as a physician in 19th-century Philadelphia, including letters to and from colleagues, his publications, and lectures given.
