The Jane Wright Proctor Wallis family papers provide a glimpse into early 20th-century family life through correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and memorabilia. The collection dates from 1833 to 2007, revealing a pride in the history and genealogy of the Proctor Wallis family across its many generations. In addition to familial topics, this collection features many materials documenting events of the early 20th Century as well as various Philadelphia-area social and charitable clubs.

Abstract:: The Hedgerow Theatre Company was established in 1923 by Jasper Deeter, a New York based actor and director. Located in the Rose Valley Arts and Crafts Community of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Hedgerow holds the distinction as the longest serving Repertory Theatre in America. The Hedgerow Theatre Company records contains a wide variety of materials, from business records and show materials to member ephemera and photographs. Corneille McCarn Rucker papers, 1893-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Corneille McCarn Rucker, an aspiring poet, was raised in Nashville, Tennessee and Hawaii before attending Vanderbilt University. She was the first woman to publish in The Fugitive, an influential poetry journal. It appears that despite this success, Corneille, in general, had a difficult time publishing many of her poems. This collection documents the lively social life and literary aspirations of a well-educated young woman in the early 20th century. Corneille McCarn Rucker memorialized her life in an extremely narrative and vivid fashion through letters, diaries, writings, and scrapbooks.

Abstract:: Ormandy served as the onductor/musical director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1931-1936) and the Philadelphia Orchestra (1937-1980). His collection includes general and interoffice correspondence; administrative files concerning programming; notes; programs and itineraries; clippings; and awards. The majority of the materials concern Ormandy's tenure at the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Thomas H. Jones World War II scrapbooks, circa 1941-1968 1942-1945 (bulk)

Abstract:: Thomas H. (Howell) Jones (1919-2012) was a Black soldier, serving in the 4407th Quartermasters Service Company, during World War II. These two scrapbooks document his experiences in the United States Army from about 1942 to 1945, and in particular his time serving overseas in France and Germany from December 1944 to June 1945. There is limited material regarding his life following the end of World War II.

Abstract:: The Christian Association of the University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1901, with the mission to promote "spiritual welfare of the students of the University of Pennsylvania by encouraging Christian fellowship and cooperation." The records of the Christian Association reflect the history of a hundred-plus-year-old institution which, with large and diverse investments, strong ties to the Protestant church, and a long and involved relationship with the University, has been engaged in a wide range of programs and activities.

Abstract:: This scrapbook contains Depression-era advertisements that were created for a variety of goods and industries including, but not limited to, automobiles, banks and safes, clothing and shoes, foods, fuels (gasoline and coal and coke), home improvement, insurance, medicines and pharmaceuticals, printing and engraving, stationery, and train travel. Included are political ads, ads recruiting United States Marines, and ads promoting the value of the the Boy Scouts and the YMCA. The bulk of the ads are from the United States, but there are four from New Zealand.

Schuylkill Navy records, 1859-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia was founded in 1858. It is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States. By charter, "[the Schuylkill Navy’s] object is to secure united action among the several Clubs and to promote amateurism on the Schuylkill River." The Schuylkill Navy records documents the history of this rowing organization from 1859 to 2009. An organization dedicated to hosting rowing events for its member clubs and visiting teams, the collection houses the administrative records of the Schuylkill Navy and its member clubs, including the original founding members as well as clubs that joined the organization later; and records related to the planning and promotion of regattas. In addition, the collection includes an extensive assortment of newspaper clippings and photographs that highlight Schuylkill Navy rowing events and its influential members.
