Abstract:
The Division of Environmental Research (DER) was established as a department of the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1947 by botanist and limnologist, Dr. Ruth Patrick. Originally called the Department of Limnology, the department was envisioned by Patrick as a multidisciplinary team of scientists devoted to helping protect the quality of the environment. Not only was environmental research a novel idea for the time, but the multidisciplinary nature of the research was also innovative. The primary goals of the Division were to, "understand aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including the effects of natural processes and human activities; apply this knowledge to assess ecosystems health and developing watershed-level strategies for enhancing environmental quality; and work with diverse stakeholders, including government, community groups, industry and environmental organizations to improve environmental stewardship" (ansp.org). Pennsylvania Horticultural Society minute books, 1827-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) was founded on November 24, 1827 by fifty-three prominent Philadelphians; among them Horace Binney, David Landreth Jr., William Davidson, George Pepper, Nicolas Biddle and Moses Brown. Emulating similar societies existing in England at the time, the men formed their Society to promote “a highly instructive and interesting science for the purpose of improving the growth of vegetables, plants, trees, fruits and flowers.” Since that time, the Society and its membership has fostered “…an appreciation of plants, acquiring scientific knowledge about them, disseminating horticultural information, and involving the public in gardening and beautifying the City of Philadelphia.” More recently, the Society has worked specifically to beautify the city and help realize William Penn’s founding vision for Philadelphia to be a “greene countrie towne.” This is a collection of meeting minutes of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Horticultural...(see more)

Abstract:
Four presidents of Drexel University are represented in the collection: James Creese (1896-1966, president 1945-1963), William Walsh Hagerty (1916-1986, president 1963-1984), William Samuel Gaither (b. 1932, president 1984-1987), and Richard Breslin (b. 1937 or 1938, president 1988-1994). This collection consists of subject files, reports, and other materials compiled by the staff of the Office of the President between 1950 and 1989, overlapping the terms of several presidents. It contains substantial material on the University City Science Center and President Gaither's long-range plan developed in the 1980s. The materials include correspondence, reports, memorandum, drafts, inauguration programs, pamphlets, brochures, drafts of reports,newspaper clippings and photocopies, minutes, agendas, and transparencies. Arrangement: Portions of the collection are arranged alphabetically by subject within each box.

Abstract:
The Drexel Evening College was founded in 1891, as the Department of Lectures and Evening Classes within the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, and held its first classes in 1892. A program of study geared towards working adults, it offered courses in drawing, decorative painting, modeling, woodcarving, stained glass, mathematics, bookkeeping, stenography and typewriting, chemistry, physics, shop work in wood and iron, cookery, dressmaking, millinery, physical culture, economics, English and architecture. Since its inception, the Evening College has undergone significant academic, administrative and physical transformations, adapting to accommodate an ever changing student body as well as administrative and academic agendas. Nehemiah Robinson reports on indemnification and reparations, 1945-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Nehemiah Robinson (1898-1964) was a lawyer, the director of the Institute of Jewish Affairs of the World Jewish Congress, and an authority on indemnification and reparations and war crimes following World War II and the persecution of the Jewish peoples. These two volumes contain eight reports written by Robinson for the Institute of Jewish Affairs relating to restitution legislation and court practices, as well as official and unofficial actions and views on reparations across the world.

Abstract:
This collection includes papers from Wilmot Rufus Jones's time on the Board of the Corporation of Haverford. There is also significant material from his alumni activities, particularly alumni donations and his term a the Class of 1923 Alumni Representative. These include correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, publications, and miscellaneous papers. There are similar materials from Phi Beta Kappa, as well as some correspondence and reports from his time on the Council for Delaware Education. Additionally, there is correspondence and reports from Jones's days serving on the Board of Managers and working with the Corporation of Haverford College. Materials on the Executive Committee, Committee on Committees, and the Standing Nominating Committee are included.

John E. Hand & Sons Co. records, 1865-2002, undated [bulk dates: 1900-1980]

Abstract:
The John E. Hand & Sons Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1873. The Hand Company built navigational equipment for all varieties of floating vessels, and operated a chain of retail outlets with “service stations” in numerous port cities, including Baltimore and New Orleans, until 1956. Service stations sold Hand instruments as well as other nautical paraphernalia and provided compass adjusting services. The collection documents the business activities of the John E. Hand & Sons Company from its institution in 1873 to 1997, when the company was sold. The collection boasts a wide breadth of material that includes legal documents, financial records, patents, correspondence, contracts, reports, catalogs and other ephemera, photographs, and engineering plans. Together, the records provide a thorough account of the firm’s operations.

Abstract:
The College of Physicians was founded in 1787 as a private medical society devoted to the advancement of medical education, research, and guidance of the medical profession itself. In order to help fulfill these goals, the College's Fellowship have garnered impressive resources including a biomedical library in 1788, a medical museum in 1858, an institute for the history of medicine in 1976, and museum education programs in 2006. These resources are housed in a building constructed in 1909 at 19 South Twenty-Second Street. With its rich resources, adjoining medicinal herb garden, and ample meeting space, the College serves as a repository for the history of Philadelphia medicine and as an arena for the discussion of contemporary health care issues. Over the years, numerous committees have been formed in order to assist in the daily operations of the College, administer fundraising campaigns, and implement special projects.
