Abstract:: During the mid-to-late 1970's, South Asia, most especially India and its immediate neighbors, experienced a period of civil and political unrest. This collection consists of French press photos concerning events in South Asia from 1935-1994, with particular emphasis on the turbulent years of the mid-to-late 1970s, in which India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh experienced overlapping civil, political, and environmental crises.

Edward S. Curtis collection of interpositive glass plates and papers, 1899-1929 (inclusive)

Extent:: 22 linear feet (44 boxes (2 boxes currently available to researchers))
Abstract:: Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) was a photographer, best known for documenting more than eighty tribes of Native Americans west of the Mississippi from the Mexican border to northern Alaska. In addition to taking more than 40,000 pictures over 30 years, Curtis produced The North American Indian, a set of twenty volumes containing text, photogravures, and a corresponding portfolio with additional photogravures. This collection consists of two gifts of glass plate interpositives with extensive artistic modifications by Edward Curtis for his The North American Indian as well as a small number of proof sheets of photogravures, largely from portfolios, bearing editorial markings and corrections; correspondence and material relating to the funding and publishing of the The North American Indian; and brochures and pamphlets advertising Curtis's studio and his photography.

Abstract:: The George Seldes papers document Seldes's career as a journalist, publisher and author. The papers provide an invaluable look at his crusade to hold the press accountable by exposing its corruption. Seldes believed the fight for a free press the most important fight in the world.

Daisy Kennedy Drinkwater scrapbook of John Drinkwater's Shakespearean performances, 1933-1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Drinkwater (1882-1937) was an English poet, dramatist, and actor. This collection consists of a scrapbook of material relating to John Drinkwater's performances in three Shakespeare plays at the Open-Air Theatre in Regent's Park during the Theatres first and second seasons (1933 and 1934). It appears that the scrapbook was created by Drinkwater's wife, Daisy Fowler Kennedy Drinkwater. The plays documented include: The Tempest, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night.

Josiah C. McCracken Papers, 1906-1993 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Josiah C. McCracken's outstanding athletic abilities led to his admission to the University of Pennsylvania in 1896. At Penn, he was elected president of his class for four years, and served as president of the Christian Association for three years. He also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1901. McCracken would spend a good part of his career in China where he served as chief surgeon of St. Luke's Hospital. The collection, though small in volume, represents two important aspects of Josiah C. McCracken's rich and splendid life--his brilliant achievement as an all-round star athlete at Penn and his life-long devotion to the development of medicine in China.

Edward J. Stemmler Papers, 1942-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edward J. Stemmler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1960. He had a thirty year career at Penn where he rose to the position of Executive Vice President University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. The Edward J. Stemmler Papers document his career as a physician and administrator in Philadelphia, most notably at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center as well as his military service in the 1950s.

Abstract:: The Penn Current was a weekly publication focused on the Univeristy of Pennsylvania community published between December 10, 1997 and December 21, 2017. The collection consists of images used to illustrate issues of the Penn Current. Images date between 1987 and 2005, and focus on Penn related events, and individuals. Image format varies between prints, contact sheets, and negatives.

William Edgar Pringle Harrison photograph album, 1918-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: A photograph album kept by William Edgar Pringle Harrison who served as a Leiutenant in the India Army Reserve in Pakistan. The album provides a pictorial record of Harrison's sevice in Pakistan with photographs spanning from late-1918 to mid-1919.
