Abstract:

The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. The Mütter Museum records document the history of this noted institution from 1887 until 2006. Included in the collection are catalogs of item acquisitions, visitor records, event records, and the papers of several museum curators. Researchers interested in the acquisition policies of the museum, as well as records of events and exhibits held at the Mutter should consult this collection. Additionally, the papers of Gretchen Worden are housed in this collection. The "Gretchen Worden" series contains many of her lectures, administrative material, and date books while serving as Curator and Director from 1982 until 2004. Records of the Committee on Scientific Business, 1910-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Committee on Scientific Business was created by an amendment to the ordinances and by-laws adopted in October 1907. The original committee members were appointed in November 1907. It seems the purpose of the committee was to schedule presentations by Fellows during College meetings. It is unclear when the Committee was disbanded, but it is no longer active (2018). The Records of the Committee span the years 1910 to 1940, and then from 1972 to 1978, and are comprised mainly of annual reports, minutes, and correspondence from and regarding the Committee's meetings. Several transcripts of presentations, given in 1972 and 1973, are also included in the collection, as well correspondence and event planning information for College Night 1976, the Bicentennial Series.

Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary, 1875-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. As of 2018, the Office of the Secretary is still active; however, these records are now documented through the Executive Office. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary span the years 1875 to 1988; however, there are gaps in represented years. This collection consists mainly of memos, correspondence, flyers related to lectures and other special events held at and sponsored by the College.

Records of the Section on Medical History III, 1966-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Records of the Section on Medical History III span the years 1966 to 2004, and consist of correspondence, annual reports, lecture announcements, speaker information, and Executive Committee minutes. Abstract:

The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was established in 1976 to promote to the scholarly community the rich historical resources of the College's historical library and the Mütter Museum. From its founding, the Wood Institute also took over printing and editorial duties of the College's journal, Transactions and Studies, which was published in 1793 and from 1844 to 2002. As of 2019, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Records of Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) date from 1979 to 2004 and are divided into three series: Administration, Programs, and Travel grants & Fellows.

Abstract:

In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). While the Office of Operations was not organized until 2010, much of the work fell under its direct predecessor, the Office of Programs and Internal Services, or was managed under the current (2019) Director of Operations, Antonia Oberthaler. Abstract:

Graceanna Lewis (1821-1912) was a published scholar, naturalist, lecturer, abolitionist and social reformer. This collection contains research and lecture notes on a variety of topics including: botany, ornithology, crystallography, mineralogy, zoology, ichthyology, embryology, neurology, and chemistry. There are botanical illustrations, leaf and ornithology charts, prints and sketches depicting the classification of the animal and plant kingdoms, and botanical sketches on wood blocks. In addition to scientific notes, there are notes and lectures depicting her views on the abolition of slavery, women's equality, and the force of nature and its place in the universe.

Abstract:

Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia's leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and of the AAHM. The E.B. Krumbhaar papers covers Krumbhaar's accomplishments and contributions to pathology and cardiac physiology from the early to mid-twentieth century. This collection contains Krumbhaar's research files, administrative records related to organizations and institutions in which he was involved, correspondence, and medical writings. Abstract:

The Office of the Executive Director is the lead office in charge of administering the business of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Executive Director oversees the activities of the College of Physicians staff including staff of the Historical Medical Library, the Mütter Museum, the Francis Clark Wood Institute, and the Finance Department. The Executive Director also oversees the College functions of institutional advancement, communications, membership, and special events. As a result, the records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities and governance of the College, and span the years 1953 to 2003 (Bulk 1977 to 2003).
