Hiester H. Muhlenberg and Wellington Smith Mason notes on lectures delivered by Drs. Nathaniel Chapman, Judson Daland, and J.K. Mitchell at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, 1832, 1894-1895 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This notebook contains lecture material transcribed by two different students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. One portion of the volume contains notes taken by Hiester H. Muhlenberg in 1832; the later material was written by Wellington Smith Mason during two separate courses of lectures between 1894 and 1895. The notes taken by Muhlenberg record a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman on hemorrhages, fevers, cardiac disease and nervous disorders. The notes taken by Mason, decades later, document Dr. Judson Daland's lectures on physical diagnosis and Dr. J.K. Mitchell's lectures on symptomatology.

Abstract:: George William Brown (1870-1932) was a professor of Semitic languages and Indology, a founding member of the Linguistic Society of America, and a missionary in India for sixteen years as a member of the Disciples of Christ. This collection consists of materials documenting Brown's career in research, writing, and teaching about religion, missionary work, and linguistics, dating from 1892 to 1932.

Archer family account books and notebooks, 1797-1851 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection (1797-1851) contains notebooks kept by three members of the Archer family, a prominent and politically active family of medical doctors based in Harford County, Maryland. The first file contains John Archer Jr.'s notes on materia medica lectures delivered by Benjamin Barton and given at the University of Pennsylvania in 1797 and 1798. A commonplace book (1830-1832) maintained by Henry Wilson Archer, which contains excerpts mostly from history books and poems is the second file. Also included in the collection is an account book (1841-1851) wherein the wheat purchases of Robert Harris Archer were recorded.

Dana Carleton Munro papers, 1889-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dana Carleton Munro (1866-1933) was a celebrated medieval historian and expert on the crusades who studied at Brown University and at the Universities of Strasburg and Freiburg in Germany before returning to the United States to teach history at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin, and Princeton University. Lecture notes from Munro's student days at the Universities of Strasburg and Freiburg are included in the collection as are later letters with editorial criticism of his textbook, The Middle Ages. Also included are some papers of John LaMonte, a professor of medieval history at the University of Pennsylvania.

John W. Houck lecture notes, 1900-1901, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains three books of lecture notes recorded by John W. Houck at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1900 and 1901. The notebooks correspond to courses taught by Dr. Charles Essig, Dr. James Truman, and Dr. Edward Cameron Kirk, each of whom served as the dean of the dental school for some period between 1878 and 1917. Additional files in the collection contain miscellaneous notes and papers that were previously enclosed in the notebooks. Among these papers are six pharmaceutical pamphlets advertising the antiseptic glycol-thymoline, with testimonials from dentists.

Samuel Head notes on medical lectures delivered by John Clarke, 1802-1803 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. John Clarke (1760-1850) was an obstetric physician who lectured on midwifery and the diseases of women and children at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and in his home at No. 1, New Burlington Street, in London. This volume contains notes from his lectures, recorded by Samuel Head (circa 1773-1837), a Canadian physician studying in England from 1802 to 1803. These notes provide a glimpse into the education of 18th to early 19th century physicians, who, through the professionalization of the field, became increasingly involved in overseeing pregnancy and childbirth, and taking on the role of "man-midwife."
