Benjamin Champneys (1774-1814) was a college and medical student at the University of Pennsylvania (A.B. 1792, M.D. 1805) and, later, a naval surgeon on the frigate Philadelphia. This collection consists of three volumes of notes taken from lectures and reading over an extended period of time and bound together at a later date. The notes focus on the subjects of medicine and chemistry, with additional notes on logic, mathematics, and moral philosophy.

William D. McGowan papers, 1821-1875 (inclusive)

Abstract:

William Dana McGowan (1831-1896), the son of Peter M. McGowan (1804-1889) and Maria Dana, was a physician who was educated at the Jefferson Medical College and at the University of Pennsylvania. McGowan earned his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1851. This collection largely documents the medical education of William D. McGowan at the Jefferson Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania from 1849 to 1851 through his notes from lectures and clinics. He also created a scrapbook, largely containing newspaper clippings related to business, industry, and law. The collection also contains a scrapbook, created by an unknown McGowan family member, containing copied poems, notes, math problems, home remedies, and notes from 1816 to 1837.
