Born in New Castle, PA in 1876, he attended the New Castle High School and various physical education instructor training programs. After high school, he worked for the YMCA as a physical education instructor for many years. In 1907, Cromie was hired as Assistant Professor of Physical Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He was appointed Assistant Director of Physical Education in 1919 and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1925. He also served as the coach of several intercollegiate and intramural teams. In 1920, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by Westminster College (PA). He retired from the University in 1947. He died in 1962.
Contains professional correspondence and working files created during his tenure in the Physical Education and Education Depts. (1920-1940); typescripts of publications; outlines and notes for courses he taught; books and pamphlets in his reference library; photographs of gymnastics teams (ca. 1915-1920).
