Abstract:: Thomas Bond was an American physician and surgeon. He was born May 2, 1713, in Calvert County, Maryland. In 1751 he co-founded the Pennsylvania Hospital, the first medical facility in the American colonies, with Benjamin Franklin, and also volunteered his services there as both physician and teacher. During the Revolutionary War, Bond helped to organize the medical department of the Continental Army. He established the first American field hospitals during the conflict. He was also a member of the local Committee of Safety during the war. Bond died March 26, 1784, in Phildelphia. He is buried in Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia. This small collection consists of 4 items written by Thomas Bond, dating between 1741 and 1776, including a bill for medical service to Captain Thomas Freame and a letter recommending a Mr. Duffield to conduct a small pox incoculation campaign. Abstract:: Benjamin Rush, Philadelphia physician, in 1745 o.s. in Byberry Township. In 1768, he received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh. He helped to establish the Philadelphia Dispensary and was a physician there until his death. Rush was also a member of the Provincial Congress in 1776, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and, in 1777, became Surgeon General of the Continental Army. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1787 to 1793. The Benjamin Rush papers date from 1787 to 1889, although the bulk of the material spans the years 1796 to 1810. These papers document some of Rush's work with patients through invoices, receipts of bills paid, and correposndence; as well as Rush's notes on various medical topics, including the liver. Abstract:: Collection of over 50 invoices, receipts, and engraved and pictorial letterheads from a wide range of American businesses. Businesses represented in the collection include bakeries, dry goods merchants, tobacco shops, patent medicine dealers, railroads, carpet sellers, hardware stores, lumber dealers, iron works and others mostly in Baltimore and Philadelphia, circa 1860s-1880s.

Abstract:: The parochial school system in Philadelphia officially began in 1852 under Philadelphia's fourth bishop, John Nepomucene Neumann. However, the first Catholic schools in Philadelphia can be traced to the mid- to late-18th century under the purview of local parishes, and early expansion occurred unsystematically until the 1850s. Since few parishes had the resources to provide a K-12 education, many Catholic households chose to send their children to Philadelphia's public schools. Due to several factors (including doubts about the suitability of a public education for Catholic children and growing anti-Catholic sentiment and the nativist riots of 1844), Bishop Francis Kenrick began pushing for separate parochial schools for Philadelphia's Catholic families. By 1850, nearly every parish had a free school. By 1852, Philadelphia had a parochial school system administered by a central school board. Abstract:: This collection (1880-1924) contains documents that relate to the business dealings of A. & W. MacKinlay, Limited, a bookselling company founded by Andrew and William MacKinlay in 1827, and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.The bulk of the collection consists of invoices charged by A. & W. MacKinlay to H & A. Locke or to D. Y. Stewart and Son, two regional businesses. A few pieces of business correspondence are also included, along with a pair of ledger books which were printed and sold by A. & W. MacKinlay, but which contain the handwritten financial accounts of two unidentified businesses.

Abstract:: The John Rowe Parker papers document the varied career of merchant, publisher and author John Rowe Parker. The majority of the letters are addressed to John Rowe Parker or one of his firms. Letters from 1802-1817 are primarily concerned with Parker's work as a dry goods merchant. Letters from 1817-1823 contain most of the music-related material in the collection, including letters from music publishers, composers, and performers; requests for information about pianos and organs; and subscriptions for his music journal, The Euterpeiad. Letters from 1823-1840 are principally concerned with Parker's work on a system of semaphoric signals, with extensive letters to James M. Elford and Son of Charleston, S.C. The collection also includes personal letters from family members and friends.
