Abstract:
Collection concerning Florentine families, organizations, trades, and industries covering the years 1437-1804. The documents that compose the collection are divided into two broad sections, one dedicated to families and organizations, and the other to subjects. The former, arranged alphabetically by name, then chronologically for each family or organization, features documents pertaining to about 130 among the most important Florentine families, as well as institutions such as the Monte di pietà and the hospital of Santa Maria Novella (referred to as Spedale). The families that are best-known in the collection include the Acciaiuoli, Altoviti, Antinori, Corsi, Corsini, Guadagni, Rucellai, Salviati, and Strozzi; the best-represented families in the collection are the Amadori, Capponi, Cassi, Lapini, and Ricciardi. Robert H. Gere papers, 1752-1883 (inclusive) 1856-1883 (bulk)

Abstract:
Robert H. Gere (1859-1928) was a senior partner at Gere & Church law firm and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1883 with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and from Syracuse University Law School in 1898. Before beginning his law career, Gere spent thirteen years working as a news reporter. He married Harriet Sexsmith Gere in 1893 and together they had a daughter, Katharine. This collection contains materials dating between 1752 and 1883 and includes two diaries belonging to Robert H. Gere; a book entitled "Genealogy of the Geer Family," in which the lines of George and Thomas Geer are traced from 1621 to 1856; a single leaf from a math copybook that includes a note in pencil dating it to 1752; an oversize copy of The Luzerne Federalist; and the Susquehanna Intelligencer (a local periodical); and an unused travel accounts book.

James Tyson papers, circa 1873-1914; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
James Tyson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1841. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1863, and served as acting assistant surgeon in the United States Army and resident physician at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Later he served as professor of pathology at Penn. Tyson succeeded William Pepper as chair in the practice of medicine, a position he held until 1914. He was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1866, and served as its President from 1907 until 1910. He died in 1918. The James Tyson papers date from circa 1873 to 1914 and document parts of a nineteenth-century Philadelphia physician's professional life. The collection is divided into five series and includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, genealogical information, and writings. Previously catalogued as 10c 30 and 10c 44.

The John Bartram Association was founded in 1893 for the purpose of protecting and enhancing the the home and garden of John Bartram, known today as "Bartram's Garden." This collection, dating from 1779 to 1937 (bulk 1893 to 1911), document the association's foundation and early administrative activities predominately through correspondence, accented by newspaper clippings, advertising fliers, and invitation cards.

Gotham Book Mart records, 1723-2006 (inclusive) 1967-2006 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Gotham Book Mart (1920-2006) was one of New York City's most iconic bookstores during the 20th century. Founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989), the daughter of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, the Book Mart became a social center for the New York literati and a focal point for literary modernism in the United States. Steloff's successor, independent literary manuscript dealer Andreas Brown (1933-), maintained the store's focus on avant garde and small press publications while incorporating his own interests in postcards and genealogy. This collection contains 91 boxes of material relating to the daily operation of the Book Mart; correspondence, biographical, and legal material from both Brown and Steloff; postcard and genealogical material collected by Brown; photographs of the store, its employees, and events which took place there; and manuscripts and ephemera offered for sale.

Minerva Parker Nichols Collection, circa 1811, 1891-1973 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Minerva Parker Nichols was the first independent woman architect in the country, with an office in Philadelphia and commissions nationwide. Working during the early suffrage movement, Minerva had many clients who were women. Her commissions included dozens of private residences, large and small, the New Century Clubs of Philadelphia and Wilmington, as well as the unbuilt Queen Isabella Association Pavilion at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The Minerva Parker Nichols Collection includes architectural drawings (especially the New Century Club in Philadelphia and a pair of houses in Germantown, Pa.), as well as an assortment of personal and family correspondence, photographs and other mementos related to Minerva Parker Nichols' life, work, and family. The collection also includes research files and writings about Minerva Parker Nichols.
