Overview and metadata sections

Joshua Montgomery Deaver, Philadelphia surgeon and son of surgeon John B. Deaver, was born in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, on 10 October 1901. He married Priscilla Sparks Sailer on 16 December 1932. They had one daughter, Sally Deaver Murray, who died in 1963. J. Montgomery Deaver died on 12 November 1978 at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia.

After graduation from the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University in 1924, Deaver entered the University of Pennsylvania's Medical School, received his M.D. in 1928, and served an internship at Lankenau Hospital. Deaver then held surgical positions at Philadelphia General Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, and Abington Memorial Hospital. At Lankenau Hospital, he was chief of surgical service "A" (1942-1964), then chief of general surgery (1964-1967). He held the professorship of clinical surgery in the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Medicine (1952-1970) and was also associate professor (1949-1964) and then professor of clinical surgery (1964-1967) at Jefferson Medical College. Deaver was elected to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1935. He was also a member of the American Surgical Association, International Society of Surgeons, Philadelphia Academy of Surgery (president, 19621964), and the Philadelphia County Medical Society.

This small collection of Deaver family papers, 1903-1978, assembled by J. Montgomery Deaver, contains biographical information on family members; financial material, particularly papers concerning the estate of Deaver's mother, Caroline Randall Deaver; two typescript addresses on surgical topics by Deaver's father, John B. Deaver; and several photographs of John B. Deaver and J. Montgomery Deaver.

This collection of Deaver family papers was donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Priscilla Deaver Kelley of Camden, Me., in 1987. The collection was transferred from Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia to the College of Physicians by Hudson B. Scattergood, Vice President for Development, in 1987.

The collection was processed and catalogued in June 1990. During processing, substantial collections of reprints by John B. Deaver and J. Montgomery Deaver were removed.
