Abstract:: The Olivia Stokes Hatch papers reveal the relief work of women during the early 20th century, as well as family relationships, largely illustrated through extensive family correspondence. Olivia Stokes Hatch (1908-1983) was born in New Haven, CT and attended Bryn Mawr College from 1925 to 1930. Prior to her marriage she was very active with the American Red Cross and American Conferences of Social Work. In 1939, Olivia Phelps Stokes married John Davis Hatch, Jr. an art collector, consultant, and museum director. They had four children: John Davis Hatch III, Daniel Lindley Hatch, James Stokes Hatch, and Sarah Stokes Hatch. Anna V.S. Mitchell, the sister of Caroline Mitchell Phelps Stokes, and the aunt of Olivia Stokes Hatch, spent most of her life engaged in relief work. Her career began in 1915 in Serbia and ended in 1936 in Constantinople. Abstract:: Dorothy Burr Thompson (1900 – 2001) was a prominent archaeologist who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1923. She specialized in Greek terracotta. Burr Thompson and her husband, Homer A. Thompson, were both heavily involved with the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. The collection includes her diaries, personal correspondence, and professional papers. It also includes contains both personal and research related photographs and postcards.

Hollis Godfrey papers, 1920-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Hollis Godfrey (1874-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, and he later taught at MIT and served as an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. The collection contains correspondence, including a series of letters between Godfrey and the poet Vachel Lindsay; Dr. Godfrey's publications, manuscripts, and speeches; administrative records from the Engineering Economics Foundation, which Godfrey led in the 1920s; and publications collected by Dr. Godfrey, including some pamphlets and periodicals dealing with economics, national security, and the Jewish "threat."

Abstract:: Hollis Godfrey (1987-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, where he also taught. While living in Boston he was an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. He came to Drexel in 1913 and was the President until 1921. This collection contains correspondence, speeches, and research done on Godfrey in 1959. There is also a functionalization chart on the administration of Drexel, circa 1917.

Liberty Loan Committee of Americans of German Birth or Descent records, 1918-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the records of the Liberty Loan Committee of Americans of German Birth or Descent, a committee that coordinated the campaign for the purchase of Liberty Bonds among German Americans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1918, during the First World War. Liberty Bonds were issued by the United States government to finance the American war effort. These records were kept by Louis H. Schmidt, treasurer of the Committee, and pertain mainly to the Third and Fourth Liberty Loans, with inclusion of a few subscription lists related to the fifth loan, issued in 1919 and known as the Victory Liberty Loan. The collection contains correspondence, subscription forms, lists of subscribers, reports, clippings, and ephemera, including Liberty Loan volunteer buttons and six posters promoting the purchase of Liberty Bonds.

David Rosenblum World War I letters, 1918-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: David Rosenblum (1893-1957) served in the Third Corps of the United States Army during World War I from March 26, 1918, to February 22, 1919, and was overseas in France from September 19, 1918, to February 22, 1919. Rosenblum was a talented jazz pianist and formed a sextet and a comedy duet while overseas. After returning home, Rosenblum became a dry goods merchant, and by 1941, Rosenblum had founded the first radio station in Butler County, WISR. This collection contains letters written by David Rosenblum to his family during his military service in France during World War I.

Abstract:: During World War I, Gilbert Fairchild Close held several positions in the government of President Woodrow Wilson, culminating with that of Stenographer and Private Secretary to the President. The papers document Close's work with Wilson, including the trip Close took to Europe with Wilson for the Paris Peace Conference at the conclusion of World War I.

Paul Philippe Cret papers, 1865-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Paul Philippe Cret (1876-1945) was an architect and industrial designer who taught in the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Born and educated in France, Cret moved to the United States in 1903, but served in the French Army during World War I. Following the War, he returned to Philadelphia and to the University of Pennsylvania and worked on significant projects across the country. One third of the collection comprises correspondence, including exchanges with professional colleagues and clients as well as a few family members. With the exception of a substantial group of letters written by Cret to his wife while serving in World War I, there is little personal material. None of the correspondence files contains comprehensive representation of the transactions of Cret and/or his firm on any given project. The collection also includes writings by Cret, project and teaching materials (incomplete), notes, biographical material, and photographs.
