Simon Gratz autograph collection, 1343-1928

Abstract:: The collection was assembled by Simon Gratz, Philadelphia lawyer, school board member, and trustee of the Free Library. He began collecting at age 17 and, by the time he died, amassed about 175,000 manuscripts and portrait engravings and lithographs. Many of the latter he personally commissioned. In 1916 he became a vice-president of the Historical Society. Gratz continued until the end of his life to deal with such notable American collectors as George Brinley, Louis J. Cist, Adrien Joline, Charles J. Jones, E.H. Leffingwell, and Joseph J. Mickley. The dealers with whom he dealt included Charavay in Paris, Naylor and Maggs in London, Cohn in Berlin, Benjamin in New York, and A.S.W. Rosenbach in Philadelphia. The records of his transactions survive from 1861 to 1925 in his "Autograph Journals." On January 1, 1925, Gratz noted that his collection had, because of astute sales and exchanges, "cost less than nothing." Abstract:: This autograph collection was created by Simon Gratz, starting in his late teens. A myriad of documents are included and represent Gratz’s philosophy of collecting and the many relationships he formed with other collectors in the United States and abroad. Contained here are autographed letters, legal documents, and artifacts from many prominent and well known figures and personalities in the arts, religion, government, education, and military. While there are some non-substantive letters written to Gratz much of the collection includes correspondence between prominent women and men across classes, professions, and nationalities. The collection dates from the sixteenth century to the early twentieth century. Besides date range, this collection differs slightly from the Simon Gratz collection (#250A) in its alphabetical arrangement, compared to the arrangement by categories/subjects (Case) in #250A. Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary, 1875-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. As of 2018, the Office of the Secretary is still active; however, these records are now documented through the Executive Office. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary span the years 1875 to 1988; however, there are gaps in represented years. This collection consists mainly of memos, correspondence, flyers related to lectures and other special events held at and sponsored by the College.

Abstract:: The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. This collection of the records of the Mütter Museum span the years 1892 through 2015, although the bulk of the material dates from 1988 through 2007. The records document the past exhibits displayed in the Museum, "Only One Man Died" and "The Medical World of Benjamin Franklin;"; grant funded projects, including the 2011 Quay Brothers film and the Museum Assessment Program (1994 to1995 and 2004 to 2006); portrait appraisals and acknowledgment letters; press clippings; and special projects, including wet specimen conservation in 1987, as well as various projects about the Hyrtl skull collection. Abstract:: The Records of the Committee on Fellowship span the years 1983 to 1892, although the bulk of the material dates from 1974 to 1978. Included in the collection are three volumes of list of Fellows and deceased Fellows, dating from 1973 to 1892, and 1918 to 1979. Correspondence and reports from meetings and regarding the status are Fellows date from 1949 to 1978. The Committee on Fellowship became a standing Committee of the College of Physicians in 1972. The by-laws of this year state that the Committee on Fellowship "shall seek candidates for Fellowship and help process their nominations" and "investigate every candidate for Fellowship thoroughly".

Abstract:: Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia Library records (1882 to 2005) extensively documents the administration of the College Library, as well as its public services and functions. The collection contains the papers of several librarians, curators, and other library staff, including Andrea Kenyon, Marjorie Smink, Elliott Morse, and Anthony Aguirre. The collection largely comprises correspondence, reports and records, and the bulk of the material dates from 1953 to 2007.

Abstract:: The Frederick Brown Company was founded by Frederick Brown (March 12, 1796 – February 27, 1864) after he began producing Brown’s Essence of Jamaica Ginger in 1822. Brown began production on the corner of Chestnut and 5th Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Frederick Brown Company was successful as their Essence of Jamaica Ginger was a popular household medicine and remedy. The Frederick Brown Collection consists of two series. Series I contains a variety of personal and family papers, including letters, postcards and estate and life insurance documents. Series II contains financial and legal records for the Frederick Brown Company.

John Mumford Swan's Sanitation Survey of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Virgin Islands, 1919-1921 (bulk) 1919-1921 1901-1924 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The John Mumford Swan Sanitation Survey of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Virgin Islands collection documents Swan’s survey of health conditions in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and sections of Virgin Islands from 1919 to 1920. After the First World War, Swan was sent by the Red Cross to these nations, making his recommendations for improving the health of their citizens. Swan submitted a final report on his findings to the Red Cross in May 1920, located in this collection. The collection contains three series: “Reports,” “Correspondence,” and “Subject Files,” and dates from 1901 to 1920, though the bulk dates span from 1919 to 1921. Researchers interested in John Mumford Swan’s career, the Red Cross involvement in early twentieth century Dominican Republic, or of the medical components of the United State’s military occupation of the Dominican Republic and Haiti will locate relevant material in this collection.
