Longshore family papers, 1819-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Longshore family was active in Philadelphia medicine in the 19th century and the Longshore family papers includes material from Thomas Longshore, his brother Joseph Longshore, and his wife Hannah E. Myers Longshore. Thomas Longshore was a teacher and a supporter of women's education and social reform, especially abolition. Joseph Longshore (1809-1879) was a physician who supported women in acquiring quality medical education. He was active in founding the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania and later, the Penn Medical University in Philadelphia. Hannah E. Myers Longshore, M.D. (1819-1901), enrolled in and graduated from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania’s first class in 1851 and became Philadelphia’s first female physician in private practice. She lectured extensively first at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania and then at the Pennsylvania Medical University. Lida Poynter collection on Dr. Mary E. Walker, circa 1850-1946

Abstract:: The Lida Poynter collection on Dr. Mary E. Walker consists of Poynter’s unpublished manuscript and research notes on the life of Dr. Mary E. Walker. Mary E. Walker (1832-1919) was a physician who served as a surgeon during the Civil War. She was awarded the Medal of Honor for her service and remains the only woman to have received the Medal. Throughout her life, she wrote, lectured and taught on medicine, dress reform, suffrage, and women’s rights, in general. In addition to Poynter's manuscript and research notes, this collection features correspondence to and from Mary Walker, correspondence to and from Lida Poynter, and photographs of Mary Walker.

Abstract:: The Logan family was prominent in Philadelphia from the start of the province, serving the people in many capacities, including political, medical and literary. This is a collection of manuscripts obtained by the Library Company of Philadelphia that relates to the Logan family. The collection includes papers of the Logan family members Albanus Charles, Algernon Sydney, Deborah Norris, William Jr., and James as well as family materials collected by Frances A. Logan and William Logan Fox. The collection dates from 1684 to 1925 and consists of family papers, correspondence, diaries, writings, medical texts, lecture notes, financial records, poetry, visiting cards, and invitations.

Howard Myers Scull papers, 1896-2015 (inclusive) 1936-1944 (bulk)

Abstract:: Howard Myers Scull was a flight surgeon with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He died in a plane crash on July 4, 1944. This collection documents his early life and education, his World War II service, and the way in which his family mourned his death. Researchers will find photographs, correspondence, diaries, and official documents relating to Scull's education at Lafayette College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, his military career (including training and service in England), and his death.

Veale family papers, 1872-1899 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Veale family was British, but because of jobs in the military, spent much of their time abroad. This collection largely concerns Henry Richard Lobb Veale (1831-1908), an army physician, and his son Sidney Veale Byland (1873-1899), a lieutenant in the Indian Staff Corps. Material includes inventories of possessions; a sketchbook, possibly created by Bertha Veale (daughter of Henry and sister to Sidney); and letters sent to Henry Veale from a patient, William Aitken, as well as his son, Sidney, during his military service in India.

Abstract:: Joseph (Joe) Eyer (1944-2017) was a scholar from Philadelphia whose research focused on social causes and health effects of stress. This collection includes Eyer's writings (both published and unpublished) on medicine, mental illness, and socio-economic issues related to stress; course material from his doctoral program in biology at the University of Pennsylvania; and letters to and collaborative engagement with his colleagues, in particular, Jeremy Brecher, Ingrid Waldron, and Peter Sterling. This collection documents the Philadelphia scholars' research on topics including mortality, addiction, suicide, ecology, physiology, and sex.

Herbert S. Williams papers, 1908-1950 (inclusive) 1917-1919 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection is principally composed of correspondence from U.S. Army Veterinary Corps Lieutenant Colonel Herbert S. Williams (1881-1950) to his family members, and in particular his sister Emily, nicknamed "Bon." The bulk of these letters were written during Williams's service in the U.S. Army Expeditionary Forces over the following periods: 1908 to 1909, in which Williams was stationed in Cuba and Fort Myer, Texas; 1916-1917, in which he was deployed to Mexico as part of the Mexican Expedition; and 1917 to 1919, in which he was deployed to Europe during World War I with the 12th Field Artillery Regiment. The collection also contains some limited correspondence from Williams to family members after his retirement and up to his death in 1950, as well as some official communications relating to his military service. This collection may best serve researchers interested in family correspondence during military deployment.

Paul Lowinger papers, 1951-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Paul Lowinger was a psychiatrist and founder of the Institute of Social Medicine and Community Health. His papers comprise 25 boxes of material including correspondence; writings; papers relating to organizations with which Lowinger was professionally affiliated; printed materials from other organizations; health legislation; legal records; and materials published by others in magazines, newspapers, professional journals, and independently. The collection spans a considerable portion of Lowinger's life, but the material is primarily concentrated in the late 1960s and early 1970s and is largely concerned with Lowinger's work as a psychiatrist and activist, with significant portions devoted to his work with the Vietnam peace movement, the civil rights movement, prison reform, and the American Psychiatric Association.
