George A. Hay collection of administrative files of the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1925-1965 (bulk) 1890-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:
From 1925 to 1970, the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC) underwent significant change, adapting to both survive and prosper in a transforming society. Administrative change was brought about and explored to spark institutional growth and/or to mollify financial stress. Among the more significant events in the College’s history was the 1930 move to new and larger facilities in East Falls, and an administrative reorganization in 1942. In the 1940s and 1960s, WMC also explored the financial and administrative benefits of merging with other institutions in the Philadelphia area; Kensington Women’s Hospital and the Woman’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Jefferson Medical College. Amidst all of the change, WMC continued to honor its traditions and celebrate milestones, especially its Centennial Anniversary in 1950. Abstract:
The American Society for Information Science (ASIS), was a “non-profit professional association organized for scientific, literary and educational purposes and dedicated to the creations, organization, dissemination and application of knowledge concerning information and its transfer,” (ASIS Constitution). ASIS also served as a community of users to provide help, advice and the development of new techniques to those involved in the information sciences field. This collection documents the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Documentation Institute (ADI) and later, after a name change, of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). The records are largely administrative, but do provide insight into some of the concerns and challenges those in the information science profession faced from 1964 to 1971.

Wistar and Horner Museum records, 1822-1865 (inclusive) 1845-1855 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Wistar and Horner Museum was originally founded as the Wistar Museum in the early 19th century by Caspar Wistar, chair of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. In 1818, shortly before his death, Wistar appointed William Edmonds Horner, Dean of the Medical Faculty and professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, as curator of the Wistar Museum. At that time, the combined collections of Wistar and Horner became known as the Wistar and Horner Museum. Dr. Joseph Leidy succeeded Horner as curator of the museum in 1847, and contributed hundreds of anatomical, botanical, and animal specimens to the museum collections. The Wistar and Horner Museum records date from 1822 to 1865, and consist of materials relating to museum collections, finances, funding, and curatorial activities; as well as Horner's human anatomy and dissecting class at the University of Pennsylvania. Records of the Committee on the Centennial Celebration, 1886-1887; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Committee on the Centennial Celebration was established 1 October 1884 and held its first meeting on 3 January 1885. The Committee's task was to "consider and report upon an appropriate plan to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the College in 1887." It held sixteen meetings in total, ande made the following recommendations: 1) To form a collection of portraits of past Fellows to be exhibited during the celebration; 2) That the celebration should be held January 3 and 4, 1887, including an address by the President, a reception, a special meeting for conferring diplomas on Associate Fellows, and a dinner at the Union League; and 3) Invitations should be sent to all Fellows of the College as well as presidents of other medical societies, including the Medical Society of Pennsylvania and the American Medical Association. Abstract:
The Committee on College Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1935. Over the years, the Committee on College Collections worked closely with the Committee on the Mutter Museum; by 1939, the same Fellows served on both committees. The Museum Council of Philadelphia is the oldest and one of the largest regional associations of museums in the United States. Gretchen Worden was an avid supporter of local, national, and international professional organizations. She spent her career at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and later joined the Museum Council of Philadelphia. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities, operations, and programs of various committees of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Museum Council of Philadelphia, and span the years of 1932 to 2006. The Office of the Executive Director is the lead office in charge of administering the business of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Executive Director oversees the activities of the College of Physicians staff including staff of the Historical Medical Library, the Mütter Museum, the Francis Clark Wood Institute, and the Finance Department. The Executive Director also oversees the College functions of institutional advancement, communications, membership, and special events. As a result, the records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities and governance of the College, and span the years 1953 to 2003 (Bulk 1977 to 2003). Abstract:
The Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia was founded in 1858. It is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States. By charter, "[the Schuylkill Navy’s] object is to secure united action among the several Clubs and to promote amateurism on the Schuylkill River." The Schuylkill Navy records documents the history of this rowing organization from 1859 to 2009. An organization dedicated to hosting rowing events for its member clubs and visiting teams, the collection houses the administrative records of the Schuylkill Navy and its member clubs, including the original founding members as well as clubs that joined the organization later; and records related to the planning and promotion of regattas. German Society of Pennsylvania Foreign Relief Committee records, 1919-1925, 1929

Abstract:
This collection contains the records of the German Society of Pennsylvania's Foreign Relief Committee, which from late 1919 through 1922 contributed humanitarian aid to the populations of Germany and Austria in the wake of the First World War. Most of the aid was distributed through the American Friends Service Committee. The collection contains correspondence, appeals, reports, financial records, and ephemera. The correspondence includes letters from 78 charitable organizations in Hamburg, Germany, that applied for distributions of donated sacks of flour in 1919; and nine letters written from various parts of Germany in 1922 during the period of inflation. The Foreign Relief Committee was comprised of an all-male committee of the Society and a committee of the Society's Women's Auxiliary, whose greatest contributions were in the form of knitted and sewn items produced by the members at weekly gatherings.
