Abstract:
The Sarah Wistar Rhoads family papers indicate strong relationships and family ties that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. These papers include correspondence, financial records, diaries and journals, memorabilia, classwork and notes, copied poems, prayers, sermons and verses, memorials, genealogical research, Quaker material and photographs. Researchers interested in family papers and Quaker family dynamics, social life, and customs may find this collection extremely useful.

The volume features poems copied by various friends of Phebe Clapp Thomas, and focuses on friendship, reflection, religion, and faith. Among those extracts that were signed, signatures from the following individuals are included: Jemima Hamond, Ann M. Thorne, Elias Hicks Jr., Joseph Griffen, B. Barton, Elizabeth Wenzer, Adeline Begnor, Jane Charlotte Leach, Marcia L. Haight, and E. Mitchell. A number of extracts are unsigned, including extracts of poetry by Shakespeare and Sir Walter Scott. This volume was previously identified as an autograph book.

The collection consists primarily of photographs depicting various Tatum and Leeds family members, including Sarah Mickle Tatum and Lewis L. Tatum, at least one kept while she was a student at Westtown Boarding School in Westtown, Pennsylvania, and of Lewis L. Tatum.

Abstract:
This collection spans more than two centuries and includes most notably members of the Allinson and Taylor families. There are also letters from Joseph Bonaparte, Sarah Moore Grimke, Julia Ward Howe and George Washington. Prominent material types include correspondence, diaries, financial, legal and property papers, maps, photographs and poetry. The richest subject veins are anti-slavery, including the Free Produce Association of Friends, the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia and settlement of land in New York.
