Abstract:: Henry Augustus Pilsbry, Dean of American Malacologists, was the conservator, curator and head of the Department of Shells at the Academy of Natural Sciences for 70 years. He was also the internationally recognized authority in the field of land mollusks. He wrote and edited many volumes of the Manual of Conchology and from 1889 until his death was an editor of the journal Nautilus, which he founded. A member of many scientific expeditions, he traveled all over the United States, to the Caribbean, South America, Mexico, Hawaii and other Pacific Islands, and to Australia. This collection contains the professional papers of Henry A. Pilsbry between the years 1885 and 1957. The bulk of this collection consists of Pilsbry’s working files and drafts of published material that came from those files, including a draft of the second volume of Land Mollusks of North America. Walter D. Palmer collection of materials on the Black Bottom Project and other displaced Philadelphia communities, 1875-2017 (inclusive) 1962 – 2010 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Black Bottom Project worked to document the history of the Black Bottom neighborhood of Philadelphia, with particular emphasis on the displacement of thousands of community residents following redevelopment plans endorsed by the City of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. Over time the project expanded to look at other Philadelphia neighborhoods that experienced similar community displacement and gentrification. The catalyst for the project was the course "Neighborhood Displacement and Community Power," (Urban Studies 448) taught by Walter D. Palmer (born 1934) and the research conducted by its students over many semesters from 1995 to 2010. The collection includes original student research, public records and other documentary sources, resident interviews, a short film, and digital files and paper printouts from the creation of a website.

Abstract:: This collection documents the academic work of Karen Buhler-Wilkerson (1944-2010), a Registered Nurse, Professor of Community Health, Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, historian, author, and co-creator of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing's Living Independently for Elders program (LIFE). The collection is categorized into three general series of materials: School of Nursing, Programs, and Teaching. Together, they offer insight into her academic work, particularly her teaching, historical research, and Buhler-Wilkerson's interest in the LIFE program.

Abstract:: The University of Pennsylvania Center for Urban Research and Experiment, known as CURE, was established in 1968 under the direction of Robert B. Mitchell. This collection of minutes, reports, memorandum, correspondence and audiocassettes collected by associate professor Jacob B. Ukeles provides documentation of the Center's urban strategies project. Under the direction of Ukeles, the project sought to designate alternative strategies for urban problem areas.

Philadelphia Orchestra Association records, 1900-2023 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900, and has developed and maintained its status as a prominent symphonic ensemble throughout its existence. Its history informs and intersects with the broader history of music in the twentieth century, as well as numerous historical movements, events and developments on a regional, national and global scale. The records of The Philadelphia Orchestra Association document its activities from 1900 to 2023 through administrative records, concert programs, photographs, scrapbooks and audio and visual recordings. This collection is not fully processed. While materials listed here have been processed and are available for research, a significant portion of the collection, labeled "unavailable," remains in process and cannot be consulted at this time. As soon as additional portions of the collection are completed they will be made available via additions to this finding aid. The last addition of completed materials occurred on October 26, 2023.

Graeme Moore collection of Ian Hamilton Finlay material, 1972-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) was a Scottish poet, artist, and landscape and garden designer, best known for his prints and pamphlets and his iconic garden Little Sparta, a collaboration with his second wife, Sue MacDonald-Lockhart. Graeme Moore is an English landscape and garden designer and critic, and former head gardener of Little Sparta. This collection contains material collected by Graeme Moore related to his relationship with Ian Hamilton Finlay and Finlay's work.

This collection documents the last eight years of Helen Weiss's life through letters to her brother, Frank; her educational and musical achievements; and recordings of her work; as well as her legacy as a musician after her death at age 28.

Abstract:: Ted Weems (1901-1963) was a musician, an American bandleader, and the director of the Ted Weems Orchestra. He gained national renown for several hits, including "Somebody Stole My Gal," "Piccolo Pete," and "Heartaches." This collection documents the professional musical career of Weems with scores, sheet music, and song sheets; photographs and images; scrapbooks; and recordings. There is limited family and personal material; and in general, this collection shows Weems's public persona rather than the private man.
