Biddle family Papers, 1793-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of Philadelphia Quaker Owen Biddle (1737-1799), his son, Clement Biddle (1778-1856), and numerous descendants. Owen Biddle, a scientist and merchant, was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting and helped in the establishment of Westtown School (1799). Owen Biddle's papers, 1772-1793, (Series 1) include correspondence, and journals, some of which relate to his Revolutionary War activities. Three of his letterbooks, 1778-1779, have been microfilmed. The collection contains correspondence, journals, letterbooks, and account books, together with other manuscript material reflecting the social and cultural life and religious activities of a prominent Quaker family of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Papers of Lucy Biddle Lewis (1861-1941) are important for association with the women's suffrage movement and for early activities of the American Friends Service Committee. Daniel Raynes Goodwin Papers, 1837-1890 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Daniel Raynes Goodwin was the ninth Provost of the University of Pennsylvania from 1860-1868, and an Episcopal priest. The Daniel Raynes Goodwin Papers consist of three account books which document his expenses and financial history from 1837-1890.

John Reynolds mathematics copy book and account book, 1802-1885 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Reynolds appears to have been a farmer in Bassingham in Lincolnshire, England in the first half of the 19th century. This volume contains mathematical exercises and examples applied to the building trade from around 1802; the Bassingham Sunday School Library rules (penned by Reynolds in 1816), and Reynolds's farm accounts from 1816 to 1820. The volume provides a glimpse into the life of an educated farmer who was active in his community and church.

Abstract:: The Sarah Wistar Rhoads family papers indicate strong relationships and family ties that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. These papers include correspondence, financial records, diaries and journals, memorabilia, classwork and notes, copied poems, prayers, sermons and verses, memorials, genealogical research, Quaker material and photographs. Researchers interested in family papers and Quaker family dynamics, social life, and customs may find this collection extremely useful.

Abstract:: The account books of Josiah W. Leeds record the publication account of various books written by Leeds and others. Each volume records the number of volumes purchased, who they were sold to, or how they were distributed, and the price each volume was sold for, for each title. At the back of each volume are clippings of book reviews for the titles accounted for in the volume.
