Abstract:

This collection contains the papers of Edward P. Thatcher, including a copy of his 1955 article in the Friends Journal, entitled "Western Exploration and Quaker Naturalists", and letters in response to this article from such Friends as William Hubben, William Bacon Evans, and Howard J. Bourne. Also included are letters relating to the William Hobson diary and the article Thatcher later published on the diary. Correspondents include Frederick Tolles and Levi Pennington. The letters include biographical data on John Cassin, William Hobson, and genealogical data on the Minthorn, Hobson, and Bourne families.

Abstract:

The primary activity of the Friends' Publishing Corporation is Friends Journal, a Quaker periodical. The latter was the successor to The Friend, the serial published by the Orthodox Quakers (1827-1955) and Friends Intelligencer, published by the Hicksite Quakers (1844-1955). It was established as a result of the merger of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, and the first consolidated issue was dated July 2, 1955. Originally published weekly and then bi-weekly, it became a monthly periodical in 1988.

William Hubben Papers, 1906-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:

William Hubben (1895-1974) was a prominent Quaker educator, speaker, editor, and author. Born in Germany in 1895, William Hubben joined the small but growing movement of German Quakers in 1923 and participated in a number of international religious and peace conferences. His political involvement with the Social Democratic Party caused his dismissal in 1933 by Hitler's government. He emigrated to the United States with his wife, Maria, and children soon afterward, and went on to be heavily involved with Quakerism there. The collection contains correspondence (1906-1976), manuscript and published writings (1924-70), editorials, reviews, speeches, notes, pictures and memorabilia, and reference materials of William Hubben. Part of the collection is in German.

American Friends Fellowship Council Records, 1933-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The American Friends Fellowship Council had its origin in the Fellowship Committee of the American Friends Service Committee. Founded in 1933, its primary purpose was to foster an increased interest in Quakerism throughout the United States and to draw all Friends groups into closer sympathy and fellowship. The Fellowship Council merged with the Friends World Committee, American Section, in 1954. The collection includes correspondence and administrative records, minutes, financial statements, membership lists, publicity, correspondence about new meetings, Intervisitation, and Wider Quaker Fellowship, 1933-1954.
