Bryn Mawr College Posters for International Expositions Collection, 1893-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bryn Mawr College showcased its mission and prestigious programs at international expositions with an array of displayed materials. The awards in the collection demonstrate the success of these exhibitions and recognition of the high level of education provided to the undergraduate and graduate students in attendance at the college. The earliest exhibited materials in the collection were shown in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the college won an Educational Exhibit Award. Bryn Mawr was a relatively young institution at the time of the exposition in Chicago, having been open for less than ten years. In 1900, Bryn Mawr College had a more established reputation within the international community. The collection includes materials from the Paris exposition, though there are fewer materials in comparison with the St. Louis exhibit only four years later. J. Hampton Barnes collection of autograph letters, 1804-1891 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The J. Hampton Barnes Collection of Autograph Letters consists of 37 documents, most which are letters written to Dr. David Hosack (1769-1835). After attending Columbia and Princeton, he began his medical practice in Alexandria, VA. He subsequently was Professor of Botany at Columbia and taught in the medical school. He was the attending physician at the Burr-Hamilton duel, a founder of Rutgers Medical College, a founder of Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and an author of numerous scientific works and biographies. The collection contains correspondence from a number of noteworthy people, such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Baron von Humboldt, and Sir Humphry Davy.

Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook, 1890-1897 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ruth Emerson majored in Greek and Latin, graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1893. She did graduate work at Columbia College and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in these areas, as well. She taught Latin, Greek, and History at the secondary school level. The Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Ruth Emerson, Bryn Mawr College class of 1893. The scrapbook, which ranges from 1890-1897, consists mostly of letters and poems to Ruth from friends and other personal memorabilia without a lot of context.

Margaret Hilles (Johnson) scrapbook, 1890-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Hilles was born in 1870. She went to secondary school in Wilmington and later attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1893. Her husband was a mining engineer, and she did a large amount of travelling until his death in 1919. Hilles was involved in a number of groups. She was active in Friends organizations and a founder of the Chester County Library Association. She was a member of the Downingtown Friend's Meeting and the Downingtown Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital. Hilles passed away in 1950. The Margaret Hilles Johnson scrapbook contains Johnson's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from roughly 1890-1910, but focuses on Hilles' four years at Bryn Mawr.

Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook, 1894-1896 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Rebecca Mattson was from Breckenridge, Minnesota. She studied English and German at Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1896. After graduation, Mattson taught English and Latin at Miss Bardwell's School (1896-98), later serving as principal of the school (1898-1902). In 1901, she married Philip Jackson Darlington and had three children. The Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook comprises Mattson's one volume scrapbook and covers her last two years at Bryn Mawr, from 1894-1896. It provides a unique view of the early days of Bryn Mawr.

Marion Parris Smith was a student at Bryn Mawr, who later became a Professor of Economics at the college. Her scrapbook spans from 1897 to 1906 and gives an excellent overview of the undergraduate and post-graduate life of a Bryn Mawr student.

Bryn Mawr College photo archives inventory, 1885-2000s

Abstract:
The Photo Archives comprises photographs, slides, transparencies, and negatives depicting the history of Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to the early 2000s. The majority of prints are in black-and-white, though there are a few in color from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Older prints range from carte-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and some other early photomechanical processes. Photos are organized in three sub-collections: People; Buildings and Campus; and Events and Groups. The sub-collection People contains photos of notable and miscellaneous persons from the College. The Buildings group includes images of past and current campus buildings, including exterior and interior views. The Events and Groups sub-collection comprises events, campus happenings, and student life. There are also portraits of early alumnae, yearbook photographs, Bi-Co news photographs, and images from the Summer School of Women Workers in Industry (SSWWI). Sylvia Scudder (Bowditch) scrapbook, 1895-1906 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Sylvia Scudder (later Bowditch) was born in 1875. She was prepared by the Cambridge School for Girls in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She matriculated with the Bryn Mawr class of 1899, but received her degrees—in Greek and French—in 1901. From 1901-1902, she did graduate work in Greek at Radcliffe College. She taught Greek and English as the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland from 1902-1904. She married Ingersoll Bowditch in 1904. For 21 years, she was the treasurer of the Bryn Mawr Club of Boston, as well as being the collector and editor for her class. She passed away in 1964. The Sylvia Scudder Bowditch scrapbook houses Scudder's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains materials from 1895 to 1906 and primarily contains photographs and other Bryn Mawr memorabilia.

Mildred Fairchild Woodbury was a noted labor economist and educator. Her collection contains materials from 1894-1975 and includes a variety of materials related to the Department of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College, the American Association of University Women Philadelphia, the YWCA, the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee for Public Assistance, and the Southeast Regional Planning Council, the Pennsylvania Criminal Justice Planning Board, and some personal materials.
