Friends Freedmen's Association Records, 1863-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Extent:: 4 linear ft.
Abstract:: Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Margaret Hall Whitfield Papers, 1943-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Margaret Rumsey Hall Whitfield (bornJune 23, 1933) was a 1955 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, did graduate work at Radcliffe and Harvard in Education in the late 1950s, and spent much of her life in either Concord or Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where she raised a family, raised and rode horses, managed businesses and property, and wrote. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, founder of Simon's Rock College, and Livingston Hall, who taught law at Harvard. The papers consist of her extensive notebooks of journal entries, correspondence, photographs, and writings documenting her life from high school at the Cambridge School in Weston, MA in 1947 to her move to California in the 2000s. Bryn Mawr College Posters for International Expositions Collection, 1893-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bryn Mawr College showcased its mission and prestigious programs at international expositions with an array of displayed materials. The awards in the collection demonstrate the success of these exhibitions and recognition of the high level of education provided to the undergraduate and graduate students in attendance at the college. The earliest exhibited materials in the collection were shown in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the college won an Educational Exhibit Award. Bryn Mawr was a relatively young institution at the time of the exposition in Chicago, having been open for less than ten years. In 1900, Bryn Mawr College had a more established reputation within the international community. The collection includes materials from the Paris exposition, though there are fewer materials in comparison with the St. Louis exhibit only four years later. J. Hampton Barnes collection of autograph letters, 1804-1891 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The J. Hampton Barnes Collection of Autograph Letters consists of 37 documents, most which are letters written to Dr. David Hosack (1769-1835). After attending Columbia and Princeton, he began his medical practice in Alexandria, VA. He subsequently was Professor of Botany at Columbia and taught in the medical school. He was the attending physician at the Burr-Hamilton duel, a founder of Rutgers Medical College, a founder of Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and an author of numerous scientific works and biographies. The collection contains correspondence from a number of noteworthy people, such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Baron von Humboldt, and Sir Humphry Davy.

Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook, 1890-1897 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Ruth Emerson majored in Greek and Latin, graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1893. She did graduate work at Columbia College and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in these areas, as well. She taught Latin, Greek, and History at the secondary school level. The Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Ruth Emerson, Bryn Mawr College class of 1893. The scrapbook, which ranges from 1890-1897, consists mostly of letters and poems to Ruth from friends and other personal memorabilia without a lot of context.

Margaret Hilles (Johnson) scrapbook, 1890-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Margaret Hilles was born in 1870. She went to secondary school in Wilmington and later attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1893. Her husband was a mining engineer, and she did a large amount of travelling until his death in 1919. Hilles was involved in a number of groups. She was active in Friends organizations and a founder of the Chester County Library Association. She was a member of the Downingtown Friend's Meeting and the Downingtown Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital. Hilles passed away in 1950. The Margaret Hilles Johnson scrapbook contains Johnson's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from roughly 1890-1910, but focuses on Hilles' four years at Bryn Mawr.

Lois Linn Killough Buss scrapbook, volume 1: 1943-1947 volume: 1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lois Linn Killough attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating with the class of 1947 with a degree in Geology. Killough remained highly involved in alumnae activities post-graduation. She married Onno B. Buss and had two children. Killough volunteered the Interfaith Human Relations Council and the Women's Program Committee. She worked for the Cox Travel Bureau (travel consultant), the Olson Travel Organization (tour conductor), and the Humble Oil and Refining Co. (evaluation geologist). Killough died February 11, 1998. The Lois Linn Killough Buss scrapbooks Killough's two scrapbooks. The bulk of the material in Volume 1 is from Killough's Bryn Mawr career, from 1943-1947. Volume 2 contains material from 1947 only.
