Abstract:
The Griffith family were Quakers involved in the textile industry in the area of Winchester, Virginia before the Civil War. Aaron H. Griffith was active in the Orthodox branch of Hopewell Monthly Meeting and was an Elder and Clerk of that Meeting. The collection includes family correspondence and miscellaneous manuscripts of the Griffith family, as assembled by Sylvia Dannett who was writing a novel about Aaron H. Griffith's daughter, Harriet Griffith Ellis. Of particular interest are the letters and journal of the latter while she was attending Westtown School in the mid-1850's. Also includes some typescript copies of the same.

Includes Westtown mensuration book, 1835, with newspaper clippings glued in, 1889-1893 & n.d. Also assorted newspaper clippings concerning the Twining, Atkinson, and Smith families, the Carlisle Indian School, Quakers in Bucks County (Pa.), Bucks County history, the Molloy family, and Friends' schools. Obituaries of note in this folder are Isaiah Quinby, 1716-1807; Eleanor Mabel Malloy, 1883-1908; Miranda Doan Baker, d. 1900; Mary B. Stradling, d. 1899; Abram R. Vail, d. 1899; Marcie A. Warner, d. 1914; Sarah Heston, b. 1800. The third folder contains a collection of poems clipped from newspapers, 1872-1916 and n.d., and a letter from Benjamin Smith to Esther Smith, 1804.

Correspondence includes letters written by Amos W. Bacon of Philadelphia to his children, to Samuel W. Bacon from his father and brother while he was at Westtown School, and a love letter from Thomas Bacon to his future wife, Elizabeth Hall. Also contains the probate copy of the will of Charles West, Elizabeth Hall's copy book, the journal of Jane Wilson Bacon, and genealogical material on the entire family.

Abstract:
William F. Wickersham (1864-1927) served as the principal of Westtown School, a prominent Quaker boarding school in Chester County, Pennsylvania, from 1896 to 1913. Wickersham was a graduate of the school and also worked as a teacher there for many years. He also served as the school's bookkeeper and was president of the Alumni Association. The William F. Wickersham family papers, circa 1813-1982 (bulk, 1877-1925), primarily consist of correspondence, student exercise books and notebooks, essays and addresses, school administrative and financial records, ephemera, and other materials that document Wickersham's time at Westtown School as a student, teacher, and administrator. Also included in the collection are various materials relating to William F. Wickersham's son, Wilfred H. Wickersham, and other Wickersham and related family members during their time as students at Westtown School.

Abstract:
Contains papers relating to the Emlen family, residents of Middletown and West Chester, Pennsylvania. Chiefly correspondence (1817-1849) of Sarah Foulke Farquhar Emlen (1787-1849), Quaker minister, relating to her travels to visit Friends' meetings in England, Ireland, New England, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia. Also correspondence of Quaker ministers 1740-1790, copybooks, and memorabilia. Includes material relating to Westtown School, a Quaker boarding school in Chester County, Pa., where both Emlens taught; the Hicksite-Orthodox separation; slavery, the free produce movement and other Quaker concersn. Correspondents include Moses Brown, John Churchman, Samuel Emlen (ca. 1765-1837), Josiah Forster, Samuel Fothergill, Isaac Hadwen, Thomas Kite, Thomas Shillitoe, Esther Tuke, Joseph Whitall, and John Wilbur.

Abstract:
This collection includes manuscripts relating to the establishment of Fair Hill Boarding School by the Baltimore Yearly Meeting. Included are documents concerning the purchase of land, distribution of the Fair Hill Fund, and lists of rules for Westtown and Nine Partners Boarding Schools. These materials reflect Quaker views of education and their objectives in the establishment of Quaker schools. Especially interesting is a letter from Ann King relating the efforts of Nine Partners School to maintain Quaker values. Other correspondents include John Ellicott, William Morsell, Caleb Bentley, and Whitson Canby.

Abstract:
This collection is composed of papers and correspondence of several generations of the Moore and Haines family. Included is genealogical data, correspondence between Lindley Moore and Abigail Mott Moore at Nine Partners and Abby's mother Ann Mott, recounting details of the Hicksote controversy, and letters written by Abby Moore to her daughter Mary H. Moore at Westtown School. An account of the life and death of Mary H. Moore is also included, as well as a letter from Lindley Moore to Elba Monthly Meeting, New York, attesting to the importance of silent worship and requesting permission to hold weekly meetings in a private home. Also included are letters between Emmor and Ann Mott Haines, from his father Reuben, and to other members of his family. Letters addressed to Alfred and Emily (Potter) Haines from members of their family describe London Yearly Meeting and impressions of English Friends. Another letter is written on a daily program from Friends Academy, dated 1863.

Westtown School Archives collection of personal and family papers, circa 1780-2000

Abstract:
Westtown School in Chester County, Pennsylvania is the oldest continuously operating coeducational boarding school in the United States. It was founded by the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1799 with the goal of educating Quaker children in an environment that fostered moral development consistent with their religious ideals. The Westtown School Archives collection of personal and family papers, circa 1780-2000, consists of several small collections of personal and family papers. The individuals and families represented were affiliated with Westtown School, and many papers document their time at the school although a fair amount of materials are unrelated. Documents in the collection include: correspondence, scrapbooks, writings, portfolios, ephemera, school records such as class papers and report cards, published works, and a few photographs.
