Abstract:: The Common Press is the letterpress printing studio at the University of Pennsylvania and was founded at the University of Pennsylvania on January 17, 2006, the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth. It was conceived as an interdisciplinary project by Kelly Writers House (a writer-centered community founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995); the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts; and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts program, to create an environment encouraging collaboration among students with an emphasis on working among digital and analog design, writing, and image making. Projects included in this collection, dated 1998 to 2016, consist of broadsides, posters, flyers, postcards, cards, and chapbooks, and were created using a variety of printing processes and techniques.

Abstract:: G. Holmes Perkins became Dean of the School of Fine Arts in 1951 succeeding George Simpson Koyl. He served in that capacity through to 1971, overseeing changes in the curriculum and structure of the School in the second half of the twentieth century. The Records for G. Holmes Perkins tenure as dean of the School of Design reflect the administrative and academic activities of the school from about 1950 to 1965.

Abstract:: The School of Design started as the School of Architecture in 1890, eventually transitioning into the School of Fine Arts (1921), the Graduate School of Fine Arts (1959), and finally the School of Design (2002). The School of Design Office of the Dean Records Additional Correspondence contains additional files from the administrations of Warren Powers Laird, George Simpson Koyl, and G. Holmes Perkins that were not incorporated into the main Office of the Dean Records (UPB 8.4) when processed.
