Abstract:: This collection comprises materials written by or otherwise related to Sherman Frankel (1922-2019), a particle physicist who was a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Radiation Laboratory, a graduate student at the University of Illinois, and finally a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Most of Frankel's writing is devoted to what he termed International Security and Arms Control/Physics and Public Policy ("ISAAC/PAPP"). Specifically, much of his mature work is devoted to theorizing and debating post-launch controls (PLCs) for nuclear weapons.

Abstract:: The Benjamin Rush lecture notes consist of 34 notebooks kept by medical students at the University of Pennsylvania, which record the content of academic lectures delivered by Dr. Benjamin Rush (1745-1813). Rush, a socially and politically prominent physician who lived and practiced in Philadelphia, served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1769 to 1813. The handwritten lecture notes in this collection (recorded between 1783 and 1810) present the era's conventional medical wisdom on the causes, symptoms and cures of a range of diseases and disorders.

Abstract:: Robert Hare was a chemist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (born January 17, 1781) who is credited with developing the oxy-hydrogen blowpipe and the "galvanic deflagrator." This collection is made up of two series containing letters to Robert Hare about his scientific research, and letters concerning Edgar Fahs Smith's biography of Robert Hare entitled The Life of Robert Hare, An American Chemist (1781-1858).

Abstract:: Paul Schrecker (1889-1963) was an Austrian-born philosopher and University of Pennsylvania professor who edited the works of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz from 1929 to 1933 and Nicolas Malebranche from 1934 to 1940. This collection of his professional and personal papers consists of the teaching materials, correspondence, writing, and research materials accumulated throughout his career. This collection is of value to scholars interested in research on Enlightenment philosophers and the culture of 20th century academia.

Abstract:: The Common Press is the letterpress printing studio at the University of Pennsylvania and was founded at the University of Pennsylvania on January 17, 2006, the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth. It was conceived as an interdisciplinary project by Kelly Writers House (a writer-centered community founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995); the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts; and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts program, to create an environment encouraging collaboration among students with an emphasis on working among digital and analog design, writing, and image making. Projects included in this collection, dated 1998 to 2016, consist of broadsides, posters, flyers, postcards, cards, and chapbooks, and were created using a variety of printing processes and techniques.
