Abstract:
Elihu Thomson (1853-1937) was an English-born American electrical engineer and inventor active in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was co-founder of the Thomson-Houston Electric Company, which merged with Edison General Electric Company in 1892 to establish General Electric Company. Elihu Thomson scrapbook, lantern slides, and photographs, circa 1890-1930, consist of materials relating to Thomson's time at General Electric, as well as images of various types of lighting fixtures, images of Thomson and his inventions, and other materials.

Lemuel R. Boulware was a leading figure in industrial relations in America during the 1940's and 1950's. As vice-president of General Electric Company with responsibility for public and employee relations, he developed an approach to labor relations that came to be called "Boulwarism." He was also a noted author and lecturer. His papers comprise correspondence, speeches, articles, memos, employee relations materials, photographs, clippings, etc.

Herbert R. Northrup collection of Boulwarism research materials, 1904-1990 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection primarily contains material relating to contract negotiations between General Electric (GE) and the International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE) and the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), and the resulting case before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Northrup used this material to examine GE's employee relations policies and the implications of Boulwarism for two articles and a subsequent book. Also included in the collection is a box of personal and financial correspondence belonging to Lemuel R. Boulware and Northrup's business correspondence when he worked in the private sector as a consultant, as well as his time at GE.
