Carmella Gonnella Scrapbooks, 1936-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Carmella Angelina Gonnella attended Philadelphia High School for Girls from 1936 to 1939, followed by the School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1943 and a Master of Science in Education in 1944. While at Penn, Carmella participated in many activities.The two scrapbooks document Carmella Gonnella's educational experience from 1936 - 1944, including her time at the University of Pennsylvania.

Sky Island Papers, 1945-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Sky Island was a refugee vacation hostel run by the American Friends Service Committee in copperation with the American Christian Committee for Refugees from about 1938 until at least 1947. Flora E. Pottenger was a teacher from Warsaw, Indiana, who worked at Sky Island during the summer of 1946. Her Sky Island papers, all photocopies, include correspondence, reports, and photographs.

Holmes-Webb Family Papers, 1839-1972 (inclusive)

Abstract:: William B. Webb was a druggist and member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends (Hicksite). He married Rebecca Turner in 1853. Their youngest daughter, Rebecca St. Claire Webb, married Jessie Herman Holmes in 1892. Holmes was a prominent Quaker, taught philosophy and religion at Swarthmore College, and was active in AFSC relief in Europe after World War I. He also served as President of the National Federation of Religious Liberals and was an active member of the Socialist Party. The collection includes correspondence of the Webb and Holmes families, journals of Jesse Herman and Rebecca W. Holmes, and other miscellaneous materials. Of particular interest is the correspondence between the Holmes during his trip overseas and several letters from S. R. Sharma concerning the early Indian self-determination movement and the work of Mahatma Gandhi from 1930 to 1934.

Abstract:: S. Francis Nicholson was a prominent Quaker investment banker, longtime officer of Provident National Bank, Philadelphia, and active in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, A.F.S.C., and Friends Fiduciary Corporation. The collection contains correspondence, financial records, memorabilia, and other papers reflecting his career and life with his wife, Evelyn Haworth Nicholson.

Also a small number of letters from his sister, Linda Kaltenbach, while a student at Swarthmore College.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters written by J. Edgar Rhoads to his family while he was in Germany administering war relief after WWI. Also included are the diaries of his grandfather, Jonathan E. Rhoads, from 1908-1910. These provide a record of daily appointments and expenses.
