Wistar and Horner Museum records, 1822-1865 (inclusive) 1845-1855 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Wistar and Horner Museum was originally founded as the Wistar Museum in the early 19th century by Caspar Wistar, chair of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. In 1818, shortly before his death, Wistar appointed William Edmonds Horner, Dean of the Medical Faculty and professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, as curator of the Wistar Museum. At that time, the combined collections of Wistar and Horner became known as the Wistar and Horner Museum. Dr. Joseph Leidy succeeded Horner as curator of the museum in 1847, and contributed hundreds of anatomical, botanical, and animal specimens to the museum collections. The Wistar and Horner Museum records date from 1822 to 1865, and consist of materials relating to museum collections, finances, funding, and curatorial activities; as well as Horner's human anatomy and dissecting class at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. John Hanson Briscoe (1789-1855) was an American doctor and veteran who earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1811 and practiced medicine in Maryland. This collection consists of 11 volumes plus 30 leaves of lecture notes taken by John Hanson Briscoe while a student at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Department, from 1808 to 1811. Included are lecture notes from courses taught by Benjamin Rush on therapeutics, as well as courses taught by Benjamin Smith Barton, Philip Syng Physick, John Redman Coxe and others.

Approximately the first third of the book (through page 80) consists of medical receipts, while the rest of the text contains an alphabetized list of medicinal substances, most of which are plants, though some mineral and animal products are described as well. The term 'Materia Medica' refers to the collected body of knowledge of medicinal substances and their therapeutic applications.

This notebook contains lecture material transcribed by two different students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. One portion of the volume contains notes taken by Hiester H. Muhlenberg in 1832; the later material was written by Wellington Smith Mason during two separate courses of lectures between 1894 and 1895. The notes taken by Muhlenberg record a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman on hemorrhages, fevers, cardiac disease and nervous disorders. The notes taken by Mason, decades later, document Dr. Judson Daland's lectures on physical diagnosis and Dr. J.K. Mitchell's lectures on symptomatology.

This collection (1797-1851) contains notebooks kept by three members of the Archer family, a prominent and politically active family of medical doctors based in Harford County, Maryland. The first file contains John Archer Jr.'s notes on materia medica lectures delivered by Benjamin Barton and given at the University of Pennsylvania in 1797 and 1798. A commonplace book (1830-1832) maintained by Henry Wilson Archer, which contains excerpts mostly from history books and poems is the second file. Also included in the collection is an account book (1841-1851) wherein the wheat purchases of Robert Harris Archer were recorded.

The Benjamin Rush lecture notes consist of 34 notebooks kept by medical students at the University of Pennsylvania, which record the content of academic lectures delivered by Dr. Benjamin Rush (1745-1813). Rush, a socially and politically prominent physician who lived and practiced in Philadelphia, served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1769 to 1813. The handwritten lecture notes in this collection (recorded between 1783 and 1810) present the era's conventional medical wisdom on the causes, symptoms and cures of a range of diseases and disorders.
