Overview and metadata sections
Brothers, Irving and Alexander Broude, opened a shop in 1929 across from Carnegie Hall in New York City, specializing in the sale of used music books and sheet music. They focused on finding rare copies of music and began providing musicians and orchestras with requested pieces. The brothers began to publish these rare classical music scores and eventually published scholarly editions and reference works.
Alexander left Broude Brothers Limited in 1954 to establish his own firm. Irving died in 1973 and his widow, Anne, ran the business until her retirement in 1979, followed by their son, Ronald. Ronald established The Broude Trust for the Publication of Musicological Editions in 1983. The Trust was founded as a non-profit publisher of musicological editions of a quality not possible under normal conditions of commercial publishing. The Trust sought to make available scholarly editions that required extensive research and editorial work.
The Broude Trust for the Publication of Musicological Editions donated all of its assets, including all its publications, to the American Musicological Society in 2023, whose papers are held by the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts.

This collection contains proofs, hard and soft covered volumes, and computer files of musicological editions published by Broude Brothers Limited and The Broude Trust for the Publication of Musicological Editions. The Trust was known for its concern with editorial quality and its willingness to apply innovative methodologies in its editions. The Trust's catalogue contained editions of music from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries and included the works of Busnoys, Buxtehude, Chambonnières, Couperin, Forqueray, Gilbert and Sullivan, Jacquet de la Guerre, Lully, Marais and Marenzio.
The collection is arranged in series provided by the donor. Three volumes were labeled by the donor as "marked copy" but there appear to be no annotations within the volume. Researchers should note that five volumes are available only in digital form. The remaining digital files are duplicates of the hard copies. These items are described as "Digital Content (Reading Room Access Only)" along the right-hand side in the collection inventory.
