Abstract:
Beth Uziel Congregation was a conservative synagogue founded in 1943 in North Philadelphia, eventually merging with Congregation Ner Zedek, which eventually became the Congregations of Shaare Shamayim. Rabbi Isidore Barnett (1906-2001) was a rabbi at various synagogues across the country, including at Beth Uziel Congregation, and a chaplain for incarcerated individuals. The Beth Uziel Congregation records consist of the congregation's bulletin, administrative and club materials, program, pamphlets and the "Shmaw-Aynu" United Synagogue Youth bulletin, dating from 1957 to 1967.

There is little information about Beth Uziel Congregation other than that it was a conservative synagogue which eventually merged with Congregation Ner Zedek which, in turn, merged with the Congregations of Shaare Shamayim in 2017. According to a post by the Philadelphia Jewish History Tours, "Beth Uziel…was founded as a store front in 1943, and built this building in 1954 on Wyoming Avenue at Rorer Street. It closed in 1994, merging with Ner Zedek on Bustleton Avenue."

Rabbi Isidore Barnett was born in Philadelphia in 1906. According to a obituary copied into Barnett's Find a Grave profile, Barnett received his bachelor degree from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in New York and became ordained as a rabbi in 1929. "From 1940 to 1942, Rabbi Barnett was a chaplain at Holmesburg Prison, but his service was interrupted by World War II. Wearing the bars of an Army captain, he was a chaplain in the South Pacific. After the war, he served the Agudath Achim Congregation in Savannah for 10 years before returning to Philadelphia in 1956. In the years that followed, he served as chaplain at the Philadelphia Psychiatric Center and at Inglis House. In the 1950s, he became the first rabbi appointed chaplain by the state Department of Welfare." His last appointment as rabbi was at Beth Uziel Congregation in Philadelphia, from which he retired in 1971. Rabbi Barnett died in 2001 in Philadelphia.

The Beth Uziel Congregation records consist of the congregation's bulletin, administrative and club materials, program, pamphlets and the "Shmaw-Aynu" United Synagogue Youth bulletin, dating from 1957 to 1967.

The Beth Uziel Congregation records are arranged into four series: I. Beth Uziel Bulletin, II. Congregation administration and club materials, III. Congregation Beth Uziel programs and pamphlets, and IV. "Shmaw-Aynu," Beth Uziel's United Synagogue Youth bulletin.

Scope and Contents

The series, "Beth Uziel Bulletin," consists of sixteen issues of the synagogue's bulletin, dating from 1960 to 1966. The bulletin begins with a message from the rabbi and board chairman, and includes event announcements, club updates, editorials, religious holiday instructions, and write-ins from the congregants. The majority of the bulletin issues found in this collection are special issues relating to Jewish holidays.

Scope and Contents

The series, "Congregation administration and club materials," consists of material from Beth Uziel's Men's club and the Sisterhood, their Hebrew School, event flyers, mass mailing correspondence, lists of the congregation's officers and board members, and materials collected by Rabbi Isidore Barnett, dating from 1961 to 1967.

Materials from the Men's club and the Sisterhood consist of correspondence, event flyers and invitations, meeting announcements, event programs, and shabbat service programs. Materials from Beth Uziel's Hebrew School include mass mailings to parents and blank school forms.

Correspondence sent to congregants mainly consists of announcements of and invitations to dances, meetings, sabbath services, and the "Beth Uziel Man of the Year" ceremonies.

The collected flyers advertise adult educational programs, rules for observing the High Holidays, service schedules, and announcements of combined services with other synagogues.

There are six items which list the congregation's officers and board members for the years 1962 to 1966.

The Rabbi Isidore Barnett materials consist of his sermons, opening prayers for clubs, notes and changes to service schedules, and correspondence.

Scope and Contents

The series, "Congregation Beth Uziel programs and pamphlets," consists of four programs for donor dances and two books of remembrance, dating from 1957 to 1967.

The donor dance programs consists of messages from the congregation's rabbi and president, as well as from the presidents of the Men's club and the Sisterhood. The programs also include tiered lists of donors and many pages of advertisements.

The books of remembrance include a dedication from Yom Kippur, a meditation from the Rabbi, and lists of those who passed away the previous year.

Scope and Contents

The series, "'Shmaw-Aynu,' Beth Uziel's United Synagogue Youth bulletin," consists of five issues of the youth bulletin, dating from January 1963 to March 1964. Each bulletin consists of a message from the Rabbi and the congregation's president, as well as an editor's note, opinion pieces, events schedule, and creative writing from the congregation's youth.
