Overview and metadata sections

This collection includes music material that was gifted to the University of Pennsylvania over the years; often without a clear sense of provenance. In this collection, researchers will find material from Hugh Archibald Clarke (1839-1927), a music professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1875 to 1929; August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, a German poet and songwriter whose lyrics are used in the German national anthem; Paul Krummeich, a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania from 1925-1951; Benedict Nenninger; William Stansfield, an organist at St. James Church in Philadelphia; and Robert Jacque Wilson, an organist and a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, possibly in 1941.

In this collection of miscellaneous music material, researchers will find manuscript scores, printed scores, and printed sheet music, as well as one letter written to German composer Wilhelm Speier (1790-1878) and one cabinet card photograph of German composer Richard Strauss (1864-1949). The material is arranged alphabetically by creator, or in the case of Hoffman von Fallersleben, the collector. It appears that some of the material from Hoffmann von Fallersleben's library may have been donated to Penn, but a date and a donor is unknown. Many of the materials in the Hoffman von Fallersleben folders are based upon his poetry, even if he is not listed as the creator.
