Overview and metadata sections

Little is known about the creator and subsequent owners of this volume, which are listed on the front and back pastedowns.

The creator, Sarah Sadler, lived in Leeds, England in 1817.

The subsequent owners include Clara Barker, who lived at 48 Mere Lane in Rochdale, England; Leonard Barker, who dated his signature 6/8/10, referring either to 1910 or 2010; and M. Pearson, who lived at 21 King Square, Goswell Road, London, England. It is unclear if these owners were connected to Sarah Sadler.

This volume contains 114 culinary, medicinal, and household recipes written and compiled by Sarah Sadler between 1817 and 1834. 63 of the recipes are culinary, 41 are medicinal, and 10 are for household products.

This volume is bound in half leather with marbled paper boards. About half of the volume is blank (p. 16-139, 141-180). There is a small color-pencil sketch of a flower (p. 140) and several pages of mathematics exercises (p. 1-59). There are numerous references to places in England, including Potternewton, Leeds, Manchester, London, and Greenwood. Some of the recipes are also attributed to various publications, including Provincial Paper (p. 208), Medical Adviser (p. 211), and Kaleidoscope (p. 214).

The orientation of the volume flips in the latter portion, which contains the recipes (p. 181-224).

Examples of recipes in this volume include Mrs. Priestly receipt for cholera (p. 181), Miss Baldrey's receipt for marmalade (p. 185), washing paste (p. 187), for violent and distracting headache (p. 191), receipt for bowel complaints (p. 195), almond cheese cakes (p. 197), to hash a clave's head (p. 199), Madeira wine (p. 202), receipt for rheumatism – Dr. Johnson's (p. 204), to extract grease spots from linen (p. 206), and Blair's pills for gout and rheumatism (p. 216).
