Overview and metadata sections
The tea company was founded in the Dimbula Valley, Sri Lanka, January 1896 with the object of acquiring, working, developing 2,091 acres of land for the production of Ceylon tea. Dimbula Ceylon tea is known for its distinctive strong, fragrant flavor. The inaugural directors were James Sinclair, chairman and managing director, William Forbes Laurie, and Charles James Rowe. The company initially sold 40,000 shares with 20,000 ordinary and 10,000 preference shares.
Oversize pre-printed shareholders register for the Dimbula Valley (Ceylon) Tea Company spanning the years from 1896 to 1930. The register lists over 500 shareholders in a pre-printed volume with columns and headings. The transactions of each shareholder spans one opening. The pre-printed columns span across facing pages numbered 1 to 300. The versos record shares transferred and the rectos record shares acquired. Shareholders listed in the register include executives of the company, banks, companies, merchants, tea planters, brokers, gentlemen, and married and single women. Each shareholder's name, address and occupation is listed. The transaction information in the volume includes shares transferred and shares acquired along with the number and type of shares, price, and the distinctive share number and the date. A majority of the facing pages include more than one member. Stamped on spine: Register of members, 1-300, Dimbula. The title is stamped on cover.
