Overview and metadata sections
Fenney lived in England, possibly London. He was a trumpeter in the 2nd Regiment of LIfe Guards, a Household Cavalry of the British Army formed in 1788.
This oblong volume comprises recipes and receipts of payment records kept by William Fenney. Yearly receipts of payment were recorded by Fenney beginning in 1803 and ending in 1827 concerning his retirement pension from his service as a trumpeter in the British Army. The remainder of volume consists of culinary recipes for cakes, jams, jellies, meat dishes, patties, picklings, preserves, puddings, sauces, and wines. Currents, plums, and raspberries were use in jam and jellies. There are recipes for potted dishes such as cheese, pigeon, poultry and veal. Pudding recipes include Bath, hasty and Sultana. Several wine recipes such as birch, cow slip, elderberry, gooseberry and frontignac wine are included in the volume. Many recipes are attributed to Mrs. Raffle and Miss Dyson. The first leaf in the volume is a catalog of rose trees followed by directions for making a cast net. Written on the inside back cover: Mr. Nicholls with two addresses in London. At the top of the receipt for the year 1821 is a reference to Mr. Nicholls.
