Julia was one of five children born to Walter Burnham, a surgeon, and Annis Crawford in Windsor County, Vermont. In 1865 she married surgeon James G. Bradt in 1865. Bradt died in 1868.
A small ledger book with marbled paper covers comprising recipes and some poems compiled by Burnham spanning the years from 1860 to 1867. One the second end leaf at the front is written: Julie A. Burnham, N. Springfield, Vt., April 24, 1860. A large portion of the volume consists of recipes for cakes including breakfast, clay, cold, eggless, fruit, lemon, measure, silver, and wedding cakes. Recipes for cookies, crullers, frostings, gingerbreads, jams, meats, picklings, puddings, and wines are also included. Some recipes are attributed to neighbors and family members. One section of the volume is dedicated to poems and songs regarding beauty, death, and nature. Some of the poems are attributed to family members such as Jennie E. Henry and Carrie Perkins. Nine leaves are laid in the volume and consist of four leaves of recipes, three leaves of clippings, and one envelope. William H. Perkins, Grosse Isle, Mich. is written at on the last end paper. A few leaves in the volume are detached.
