Overview and metadata sections
Bound volume with marbled paper covers containing handwritten culinary recipes and medicinal remedies. Spanning the years 1832 to 1868, the book is written in black ink in two hands, probably at Devon, England. Some recipes have attributions and dates. There are drink recipes for wine and beer including orange wine, grape wine, and several recipes for ginger beer. A majority of the culinary recipes are for making jellies, cakes, puddings, and preserves. Some recipes are for meat dishes with two for meals to feed six people. Starting from the back and reading to the center of the volume are medicinal formulas for coughs, sore throats, headaches, rheumatism, croup, and one for insanity. Toiletry formulas for cold cream, powders, and salves are in the volume. There are a few household recipes for making poison for bugs, chalk, and cement. Names credited to some recipes in the volume include Mrs. Bagnell, Mrs. Wethered, and Mrs. Blunt. Eleven leaves of recipes are laid in the volume. One leaf is the calling card of Miss G. W. Thorold of Warkleigh, Devon, England, whose attribution appears on items in the volume. One leaf is a newspaper clipping for "Prevention of pitting in smallpox." Nineteen leaves in the center of the volume are blank. A watermark with the year 1828 appears throughout the volume.
