Abstract:

Jane Carter Goodale was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1926 to a prominent family. She attended Radcliffe College initially to begin to study for a medical degree. She was influenced by Carleton S. Coon to study Anthropology and attained both her B.A. and M.A. from Radcliffe in that field. In preparation for her Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, Goodale did ethnographic research among the Tiwi of Melville Island. Her later publication of Tiwi Wives(1971) was the first study of the role of women in a community in Oceania. Goodale began her teaching career at Bryn Mawr College as a part-time instructor in 1959. She would become a full Professor in the deaprtment of Anthropology in 1975. In addition, she worked as a research associate for the Oceania Section of the University Museum from 1961 to 1982. She also taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Barnard College, Columbia University. The Jane C. Goodale papers represent some of her drawings and photographs from research in Oceania. The extensive "Jane Goodale Papers" are held as a part of the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego.

She attended Oldfields School where she struggled due to undiagnosed dyslexia until taken under the wing of a mentor and teacher, Miss Anderson. She went on to attend Radcliffe College to begin the study for a medical degree. She was influenced by Carleton S. Coon to study Anthropology and attained both her B.A. and M.A. from Radcliffe in that field. In preparation for her Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, Carter did ethnographic research among the Tiwi of Melville Island. Her later publication of

Dr. Goodale published numerous books, articles and manuscripts and spoke at professional meetings and conferences for the American Anthropological Association and the Association of Social Anthropologists among others. Her writings reflect her interest in social customs, self perception, identity, gender identity and gender relations among the Tiwi of North Australia and the Kaulong people of New Britain Island.

Goodale retired in 1995 from Bryn Mawr College. She passed away in 2008.
