Overview and metadata sections
The law school has established several centers and institutes, including the following:
The Public Service Program was created in the spring of 1990 to coordinate public services activities for students. The year prior, the faculty adopted a Public Service requirement for graduation. Judith Bernstein-Baker was the program's first director and worked to establish connections with legal advocacy work in Philadelphia and to tie public service into the law school curriculum. The program has hosted pro bono and public interest events, including the annual Edward V. Sparer Symposium and Public Interest Week. In 2000, the program received the American Bar Association's Pro Bono Public Award.
The Center for Professionalism was established in 1987 to study, teach, and find practical applications for professional responsibility and legal ethics. The first faculty members were Edmund B. Spaeth, Curtis Reitz, and Douglas Frenkel. The center developed multi-media instructional programs for law students and the legal profession, including Professional Responsibility for Lawyers: A Guided Course published by Commerce Clearing house, a two-week course "Professional Responsibility and the Legal Profession" which was required for all first-year students, and a program for summer associates.
The Institute for Law and Economics (ILE) was established in 1980 by Professor Michael L. Wachter to advance cross-disciplinary research and bring academics into discussion with practitioners. The institute held public lectures, workshops, and conferences with business leaders, lawyers, judges, and regulators. The ILE collaborated with the Wharton School and the Department of Economics.
The Criminal Law Research Group was established in the fall of 2004 to give students a chance to work on real-world projects related to criminal law. The Maldivian Penal Code Project was led by Professor Paul Robinson. From 2004 to 2005, law school students drafted a collection of rules of criminal procedure and sentencing guidelines for the international Maldives Criminal Justice Project.
The Center for Technology, Innovation, and Competition (CTIC) was established in 2007 to enhance research, publications, and events related to law and technology. The CTIC focuses on six areas of law: competition, intellectual property, internet and privacy law, emerging technologies, health care and life sciences law, and entertainment and media law.
