Adolf D. Klarmann was an educator, linguist and author. He received his B.A. and A.M. from New York University in 1926 and 1927, and was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1930. Klarmann went on to serve as a faculty member in the German Department at Penn (1929-1975), and chairman of the General Literature Department, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (1965-1975). His scholarly work focused on Austrian literature and, and he was a specialist on works the works of Austrian author Franz Werfel.
