Abstract:

Japanese architect, Masanori Sugiyama worked in Antonin Raymond's Tokyo office in the 1920s and 1930s. This is a collection of architectural drawings, photographs, and records created in that office. Most of the drawings in the collection are by Antonin Raymond and not Sugiyama. Sugiyama's name is evident in many of the administrative and project files, however.

Masanori Sugiyama was a senior associate in the Tokyo office of architect, Antonin Raymond durng the 1920s and 1930s.

Antonin Raymond, was a Czech-American architect, who, in collaboration with his wife, Noemi Pernessin Raymond, brought modern architecture to Japan. The Raymonds had a distinct and creative style that combined their European modern roots with the vernacular craft traditions they discovered in regions as diverse as Japan, India, and rural Pennsylvania, and are best known for a series of finely detailed structures built in Japan during the 1930s. Their prolific careers included designs for factories, office buildings, churches, and schools as well as furniture, fabrics, and graphic design. They also collaborated with some of the twentieth century's leading thinkers and artists, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Cass Gilbert, Isamu Noguchi, George Nakashima, and Fernand Lger.

This is a collection of architectural drawings, photographs, correspondence, project files, and other records created in the Tokyo offices of architect Antonin Raymond. Most of the drawings in the collection are by Antonin Raymond and not Sugiyama. Sugiyama is evident in project files, correspondence and some photographs, however.
