Overview and metadata sections
The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), originally known as the Federation of American Zionists, was founded in 1897. The Philadelphia District Branch was formed in 1918. In 1912, Louis Brandeis became the organization's president, and under his presidency, the organization became more well known in the United States. During Brandeis's tenure, the ZOA represented American Zionists within the World Zionist Organization and served as an American delegate at many World Zionist Organization events and conferences. As the world Zionist movement rose to prominence, the ZOA became the American voice in the movement. After Israel's founding as a country, the ZOA joined the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations to help advocate for their mission.
The Zionist Organization of America Philadelphia District Records contain materials regarding the governing of the organization, programming, publicity, and correspondence, among other topics relating to the work of the organization.
