Overview and metadata sections

Frida Englander Flick was born in 1903 in Vienna, Austria. She fled the country in 1939 with her husband, and they arrived in the United States in 1940, with the help of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, settling in in Philadelphia. Frida worked as a garment worker until her retirement and passed away in October 1991 at the age of 98.

These journals were written by Frida Englander Flick in Vienna, Austria, as school assignments during the First World War. Flick wrote these between the ages of eleven and fourteen years of age. Each entry details the day's events of the war. The journals also give accounts of how Flick's life as a Viennese child was impacted by the war, and they provide a child's view of the war.

Each notebook contains daily entries in which Frida details the day's events in the war that was detailed in newspapers, on the radio, or through word of mouth. Within each notebook are pieces of ephemera including halftone postcards of government officials and warzone scenes, silver gelatin photographic postcards, unused ration cards, and newspaper clippings. Also included in the notebooks is a state-issued map from 1915 that includes descriptions of each party in the war with two announcements from Franz Joseph, as well as a ribbon from the Red Cross.
