Overview and metadata sections
In 1898, one of the earliest Philadelphia paperhangers' unions was organized as the Paperhangers Protective Association. Local 587 (Philadelphia, Pa.) of the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators, and Paperhangers of America, an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), was established on March 20, 1902. Local 306 (Philadelphia, Pa.) designated as the "Jewish Paperhangers Local" was chartered on September 1, 1916. In 1939, the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators, and Paperhangers of America revoked Local 306's charter, and it subsequently merged with Local 587.
The collection consists primarily of dues books and meeting minute books from the Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators, and Paperhangers of America, Locals 587 and 306 (Philadelphia, Pa.) before and after their merger. The collection also includes a dues book from Local 301 (Trenton, N.J.) and meeting minutes from the Paperhangers Protective Association. The dues books record payments made by union members. Supplementary information varies, but may include member card number, home address, date of birth, age, and initiation fee. There is an index of names at the front of each dues book. Additional records in the collection include bylaws, membership applications, newsletters, a history of the paperhangers' trade union movement, and records related to the charter revocation of Local 306 and its merger with Local 587. All Local 306 meeting minutes in the collection are in Yiddish.
The collection is arranged alphabetically folder title.
