Overview and metadata sections
Stu Goldman, an editorial newspaper cartoonist and feature comic strip cartoonist and illustrator, was born March 26, 1947, in New Kensington, PA. He graduated from Haverford High School and Kutztown University.
From 1975 to 1980, he was an editorial cartoonist for Rocky Mountain Journal and Colorado Statesman and contributing editor, writer, and cartoonist for other Denver area publications. During that time, Goldman developed a comic strip, The New Establishment, later renamed Hyper and Associates. In 1981, Goldman returned to Philadelphia and worked until 2009 as a syndicated editorial cartoonist for Jewish publications in the United States including The Jewish Exponent.
The collection contains over 1, 500 original editorial cartoons produced primarily for the Jewish press illustrating contemporaneous political situations. The collection also includes sketchbooks, caricature portraits, color illustrations, comic strips, and related artwork.
Series 2: Sketchbooks and other artwork, 1969-1998, undated
Placed on permanent loan by Stu Goldman in April 2000 and December 2010. A portion of this collection previously administered by the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center, acquired by Temple in June 2009.
Original audiovisual materials, as well as preservation and duplicating masters, may not be played. Researchers must consult use copies, or if none exist must pay for a use copy. Collection Inventory
Series 1 contains original editorial cartoons drawn by Goldman primarily for Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Maryland area newspapers. The bulk of the series contains cartoons produced for The Jewish Exponent (Philadelphia, Pa.) between 1981 and 2009. This series is arranged alphabetically by newspaper title.
Series 2 contains a series of sketchbooks of cartoons and related notes on projects; original drawings and photocopies of comic strips including The New Establishment and Hyper and Associates; greeting card mock ups and samples; advertisements, book jackets, and promotional materials designed by Goldman; color slide presentations; pencil sketches; watercolors; and linocuts. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
