Overview and metadata sections
Joe Hoeffel was a Pennsylvania politician who served in various elected offices at the county, state, and federal levels from the 1970s to 2000s. A Democrat, he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing the 153rd District, from 1977 to 1984. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2004, representing the 13th Congressional District, which included Montgomery County and some of Philadelphia County. He also served on the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners from 1992 to 1999 and from 2008 to 2012. Hoeffel ran several unsuccessful campaigns for assorted public offices including as a candidate for the United States Senate in 2004 and for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2010.
Hoeffel published his books, The Iraq Lie: How the White House Sold the War in 2014 and Fighting for the Progressive Center in the Age of Trump in 2017.
A native of Philadelphia, Hoeffel is a graduate of Boston University and Temple University School of Law.
The Joe Hoeffel Papers include administrative and financial records, correspondence, and photographs related to Hoeffel's tenures as Pennsylvania State Representative, United States Congressmen, and Montgomery County Commissioner. There are also administrative records, correspondence, reports, photographs, posters and ephemera, and video documenting Hoeffel's numerous campaigns for public offices from the 1974 to 2014.
