Overview and metadata sections
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a volunteer-based organization, founded in Chicago in 1893 by Hannah G. Solomon, that works for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. The Philadelphia Section of the National Council of Jewish Women was founded in 1894. The Montco Unit was established in 1977 and became the Montco Section in 1979. In 1990, the Montco and Philadelphia Sections merged. In 2006, the Montco/Philadelphia Section changed its name to the Greater Philadelphia Section.
The records of the Greater Philadelphia section of the National Council of Jewish Women and its predecessor chapters include board meeting minutes, reports, chapter bulletins, correspondence and memoranda, photographs, scrapbooks and other records that document social gatherings organized by the chapter and community service work including a Holocaust essay contest, a 1987 survey of working conditions affecting families in Montgomery County, and the Ship-a-box program that sends toys, books, and other educational materials to children overseas. The scrapbooks and chronological files both serve as a filing system for the year's activities and may contain fliers and invitations to events, newspaper clippings, photographs, and copies of the chapter bulletin. In some instances, copies of meeting minutes and correspondence can also be found here. This collection includes preserved versions of the organization's website, available through Archive-It.
