Overview and metadata sections
John Burnett Payne was born on February 10, 1919 in New Mexico, but grew up in Lexington, Kentucky. His father, Virgil F. Payne, was a chemistry professor at Transylvania College, which Payne ultimately attended from 1935-1938. In 1938, he enrolled in the University of Cincinnati, obtaining his master's degree in English and American Literature. In 1951, he moved to New York and began his teaching career at Pratt University. He wrote a significant amount of poetry, and published much of it. Wind, ManRoot, Charas, Kauri, and Stonecloud are just a few of the literary journals that published his poetry. In The American Zionist, he published an article "My View of Jews in American Literature." Ghosts Scare Tito Rosa and Tell Me You Love Me, Con Edison are two chapbooks Payne published in the 1970s with Kirby Congdon and Interim Books.
Payne began working on a biography of Daniel Fuchs which was never completed nor published. It appears that he was working on another novel about a character named Julie Friedhof, which was also not published. In addition to writing and publishing his own poetry, he worked as a reader for Lancer Books and Avon Books. During the 1960s and 1970s, Payne also wrote book reviews for the Alton Democrat, a daily newspaper in Iowa. He was part of the New York Poets' Cooperative and appeared at poetry readings throughout New York City. He was active in the poetry scene until he died in 1986.
This collection contains a significant amount of correspondence, verse, many of Payne's publications, and his numerous book reviews with Avon Books. Also included are financial records, photographs, artwork and ephemera, and other records. The collection also includes a carbon typescript of a pulp fiction novel "The Wicked and the Warped," possibly written by Payne under the name of Max Alth.
