Overview and metadata sections
The Prushin-Shershow Beneficial Association was organized in September 1889 by immigrants from the modern day Belarusian shtetls of Pruzhany and Shereshov. Initially founded to assist new immigrants, the association grew to offer sick and death benefits and cemetery plots. A Ladies Auxiliary was organized in 1930. The association owned burial grounds in Har Nebo, Roosevelt Memorial, Mt. Jacob, and King David cemeteries. In the 1980s, Prushin-Shershow transitioned to become predominately a social organization.
The Prushin-Shershow Beneficial Association Records contain the organization's meeting minutes, membership files, financial ledgers, and correspondence. Early meeting minutes are written in Yiddish. This collection also contains a photograph collage of members.
The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material, and then chronologically.
Donated by Prushin-Shershow Beneficial Association in 1988. Collection previously administered by the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center, acquired by Temple in June 2009.
A photograph from this collection has been digitized and is available online on the Temple University Digital Collections website.
