Henry Brooks Adams, the grandson of John Quincy Adams, became a prominent man of letters with the writing of numerous histories and political essays, most prominently "Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartes" (1913) and "The Education of Henry Adams" (1918).

Letter from a prominent American historian to "Carl" discussing his ideas for a new political party and disillusionment with the Grant Administration and with middle-age and academia. Adams mentions his grandfather's "Memoirs" and his own publication of Palgrave's poems.
